IEEE First International Conference on Multi-Media Engineering Education (M2E2) Melbourne Australia, July 6-8, 1994. Conference Theme: Reaching new frontiers in multi-media engineering education is the theme of this conference. The aim is to present cutting edge teaching techniques in all disciplines of engineering through the use of multi- media facilities. The objective is to achieve efficient and effective ways of course material delivery, novel approaches to tutoring, optimum utilisation of resources, and enhancement of learning. A comprehensive programme has been planned for this conference. The programme will include plenary sessions led by world renowned experts in the field, invited keynote speakers, invited sessions, and demonstrations of state-of-the-art multi-media based techniques in education. Experts from suppliers of multi-media equipment will present their latest products. ********************************************************************** For a quick response, the following Electronic Mail address of the Conference Secretary Dr Francesco Crusca may be used: f.crusca@ieee.org ********************************************************************** Topics: The following topics are of special interest, and contributions addressing them will be given a priority treatment. oDevelopment of computer software for teaching/learning oIntelligent tutoring software oSpecial featured simulation software oDistance education oComputer aided laboratory development oComputer animation in learning oAuthoring languages and systems oInteraction between computers and users oImpact of computer graphics on learning oIntelligent assessment methods oNovel student feedback techniques omulti-media education and the psychology of learning oOpen learning systems oInteractive CD-ROM applications oHuman, social and economic issues related to multi-media education oQuality assurance in multi-media education. oMulti-media engineering education in developing countries oPenetration of multi-media based education in teaching oPresentation aspects of multi-media educational systems oDevelopment of databases for wide area multi-media information networks Although the main thrust of this conference is multi-media engineering education, other related contributions are also sought. Venue and Facilities: The conference will be held in Melbourne, Australia. Melbourne, the world's most livable city, is renowned for its unique mix of continental and international cuisine, exquisite shopping centres, beautiful parks and gardens, and its night life. The university of Melbourne, one of the oldest and most famous universities in Australia, will host the event. The university is within walking distance of the city centre and major restaurants and food outlets. The conference will have available to speakers a host of modern multi-media lecture theatres and computing facilities. Among other standard equipment, the lecture theatres are equipped with video projectors which can be driven by (i) VCR's using PAL or NTSC format; (ii) sun workstations; (iii) PC 486; or (iv) Macintosh. There will also be laboratories equipped with sets of 20 sun workstations, PC 486's and Macintosh's. Submitted Contributions: Two categories of submitted contributions are sought. Category 1: This includes contributions accompanied by demonstrations of the medium used. These will be given high priority. The length of these contributions should not exceed ten A4 pages. Category 2: This includes papers which describe techniques and teaching methodologies without demonstrations. The length of this should not exceed six A4 pages. Invited Contributions: Proposals for invited sessions are encouraged. These proposals should be sent to the Conference Secretariat address no later than 3 January, 1994. The proposal should include a list of invited authors, a brief resume of each author, and a 500 word long abstract for each paper. The category, length, and format of invited contributions are the same as for submitted contributions. Contributions with extra pages will attract a fee of $100 per page. Journal publications: A selected number of these contributions will be published in special issues of the International Journal of Engineering Education and the Australasian Journal of Engineering Education. Format: All papers should be printed or typed on a standard A4 size white paper and on one side of the paper. The following format instructions should be closely followed: 2 columns with 5mm space between the two columns, 25mm left and right margins, 30mm top and bottom margins, 12 point Times font or equivalent. Single spacing should be used. Main headings should be in capital letters, bold, and numbered. Subheadings should be in small letters, except for the first, bold and numbered. Figures and Tables should appear next to where they first mentioned, numbered as Fig. (1), for example, with a caption appearing below the Figure or Table and centred. References should be referred to and cited in a standard IEEE format. Copyright and Conference Language: The copyright of all contributions will be transferred to the IEEE, and authors must sign a declaration to this effect. The official conference language is English. Papers written in other languages will not be considered. Authors from non English speaking countries are advised to consult a translator for the preparation of their manuscript. Assessment Procedure: Three copies of full papers should be sent to the conference Secretariat by 31 January, 1994. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by 14 March, 1994. The notification letter will be accompanied by, among other material, a registration form. Authors must fill out these forms and send them back with the final paper and a cheque to the Conference Secretariat by 9 May, 1994. It must be stressed that under no circumstances will a paper be further processed if it is not accompanied by a completed registration form and fees.
