About the Authorware mailing list, here's what the new maintainer
Peter Arien sent out a few days ago :

Dear AWARE-L members,

The aware-l has moved from aware-l@ukanvm.bitnet to

   AWARE@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE

which (for those who want a bitnet address) is the same as

   AWARE@BLEKUL11.BITNET

What has changed? Not much.

First, the home: from UKANVM to CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE (=BLEKUL11.BITNET).

Second, the name: from AWARE-L to just AWARE.

Third, the description of the list: from
Discussion of the dual platform authoring program Authorware Prof.
to
Discussion of the authoring program Authorware Prof.
This should make it a little easier for some mailers.

So, from now on you should send your Authorware related questions and
answers to

   AWARE@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE
or
   AWARE@BLEKUL11.BITNET

What else is new? Not much either :-)

First, from now on everything sent to the aware list is logged.
This means that you can ask the listserver to send you all the mailings
of a month and that you can use the listserver's database functionality
to search for a topic.

Second, those who want so can ask the listserver for a digest of the
mailing list. That means that you don't get every message as a separate
mail, but that the listserver sends you all the aware mailings as one
email message at the end of the day.

Third, there will be a gateway between this list and usenet/netnews.
This does NOT change anything for the mailing list. It only makes it
possible for people who prefer reading (and responding to) all this
via netnews to do so.

I'll explain in more detail how to use the listserv's fileserver and
database tomorrow.

Hope things work out fine. See you all tomorrow.

If you have any questions, please send them to me personally,
not to the whole list.

My email address is Peter.Arien@cc.kuleuven.ac.be

Next message :

Dear aware readers,

The listserver and the aware list have been behaving very well the
last two days. So now I can tell you how to use the extra functionality
of the new listserver.

Please don't throw this message away. Keep it somewhere safe.

Here are some excerpts from the text that newly subscribed members to
the list get:

>To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send
>mail to AWARE@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE. This is called "sending mail to the list",
>because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the
>people who have subscribed. This address (AWARE@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE) is also
>called the "list address".

That should be obvious by now :-)

> You must never try to send any COMMAND to that
>address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All
>commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address", LISTSERV@BLEKUL11.BITNET (or
>LISTSERV@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE). It is very important to understand the difference
>between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated.

And still people make mistakes. If you don't get a reply from the listserver,
you can ask for help by sending email to AWARE-REQUEST@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE or
to me (Peter.Arien@cc.kuleuven.ac.be). Danny Engelman (dengelman@cetis.hut.nl)
offered to help me manage the list, so you can ask him for help too.

Sending commands means: sending mail to LISTSERV@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE, and putting
the command(s) in the body of the mail.

>You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF AWARE" command to
>LISTSERV@BLEKUL11.BITNET (or LISTSERV@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE).

Here are some interesting things for those people who want to test their
subscription to the list!

> You can also tell
>LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the
>list. If you do not trust the system, send a "SET AWARE REPRO" command and
>LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that
>the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while
>you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program
>does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that new
>mail has arrived from AWARE. If you send a "SET AWARE ACK NOREPRO" command,
>LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look
>different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know
>immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you
>can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET AWARE NOACK NOREPRO".

Another interesting SET command, is the SET AWARE DIGEST command. This will tell
the listserver that you don't want to receive individual messages, but daily
DIGESTS. To change this again from DIGEST to MAIL, you send the command
SET AWARE MAIL.

Here's what the listserv told me when I sent the SET AWARE DIGEST command:

  >> set aware digest
  >
  >Your subscription options have been successfully updated. Here are the exact
  >settings now in use for your subscription. Please take a few moments to
  >check that this is indeed what you wanted.
  >
  >Subscription options for Peter Arien <peter.arien@CC.KULEUVEN.AC.BE>, list
  >AWARE: Ack=No, Mail=Digests, Files=Yes, Repro=No, Header=Short, Renewal=Yes,
  >Conceal=No ^^^^^^^^^^^^

>Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list
>of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX AWARE" command to
>LISTSERV@BLEKUL11.BITNET (or LISTSERV@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE). You can then order
>these files with a "GET AWARE LOGxxxx" command.

The xxxx-s in LOGxxxx are the year and the month. To get the log of the last few
days, send the command GET AWARE LOG9403. This would be a good thing to do,
since
the listserver did not send all messages to all subscribers the first days after
the list moved.

>Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the use of the listserv
>database functions.

Here's an example of what you can do with the listserv database :

First, I sent the following set of commands to the listserver:

(The first three lines should always be there!)

 // JOB ECHO=NO
 DATABASE SEARCH DD=RULES
 //RULES DD *
SEARCH Centris650 IN aware SINCE 01-MAR-94
 INDEX
 PRINT

And this is the result:

 > SEARCH Centris650 IN aware SINCE 01-MAR-94
 --> Database AWARE, 6 hits.

 > INDEX
Item # Date Time Recs Subject
 ------ ---- ---- ---- -------
 000016 94/03/30 09:41 43 APM/Centris650 problems and other things
 000017 94/03/29 21:33 40 Re: APM/Centris650 problems and other things
 000018 94/03/30 15:54 18 Re: APM/Centris650 problems and other things
 000021 94/03/30 08:28 33 Re: APM/Centris650 problems and other things
 000022 94/03/30 15:53 26 Re: APM/Centris650 problems and other things
 000032 94/03/31 08:21 49 Re: APM/Centris650 problems and other things

 > PRINT
 >>> Item number 16, dated 94/03/30 09:41:19 -- ALL

[... snip snip ... and here you would get the content of the selected mails ...]

>Please note that it is presently possible for anybody to determine that you are
>signed up to the list through the use of the "REVIEW" command, which returns
>the e-mail address and name of all the subscribers. If you do not want your
>name to be visible, just issue a "SET AWARE CONCEAL" command.

>More information on LISTSERV commands can be found in the LISTSERV reference
>card, which you can retrieve by sending an "INFO REFCARD" command to
>LISTSERV@BLEKUL11.BITNET (or LISTSERV@CC1.KULEUVEN.AC.BE).
