I would like to do some multimedia development, but don't know where
to go for source materials (photos, music, etc). I read a recent article
in New Media and I want to be cautious about where I get this material
from. I have one problem - I'm a little picky about the material I wish
to use. I would like to include classical and jazz (swing - no rock)
music.
Where can I find this stuff or how do I get permission to use material I
know of?
Is there a FAQ on this subject or some good books?
I'd appreciate any comments - mail to address below.
Thanks,
Paul

If you get NewMedia then you probably got the issue listing out all of the
stock photography now out on CD. Another option for both photography and
music is to hire a photography or music student to produce original work
for you. They get some promotion and a nominal fee and you get rights-free
music. If you don't have any "in" you can ask a department head for a
promising student. They are happy to oblige. There ought to be a contract
spelling out each person's future rights to the work.
Last summer I did a prototype multimedia project on the Boston Freedom
Trail which
included alot of historic photographs and art. The biggest headache was
obtaining the rights to use the materials from various sources. Avoid this
if you can.
Another great, relatively cheap source for transition and filler music is:
QCCS Productions
1350 Chambers St.
Eugene, OR 97402
(503) 345-0212
Their stuff is original and comes on CD or cassette. CD's are $60. The
rights include broadcast, which is unusual. There are about 12 cuts per CD.
