Networked videodisks?

Does anyone know if there are such things as networked videodisks? I.e.,
a technology that would allow one multisession videodisk device to live
on a server, with multiple client workstations able to obtain full-motion
video, or something like it, via a network.

"Ideally", the workstations in such a scenario would be PC's (potentially
relatively cheap) connected to some kind of fast Unix server via a fiber
net or something equally fast. Hopefully the fiber net could be gatewayed
to nearby TCP/IP networks, to allow basic TCP/IP connectivity to/from the
PC's and server, even if the (theoretical) specialized video traffic would
be restricted to the local fiber net.

All of this presumes, of course that 1) networked videodisk technology
is available, 2) that the server can pump real-time video traffic of
some sort onto the fiber at sufficient data rates, and 3) that suitable
fiber network cards and software are available for the PC's and the server.

If anyone has pointers to any of the technology described above, I'd
be most grateful for any info.

Regards,

At the fall InterOp show in San Francisco, Fore Systems demonstrated an
application very much like the one you describe. They had (at least) one
laser disk player distributing video to DEC, SGI and Sun workstations over
100 Mbps ATM links. You can contact Dwight Dietrich (director of market
development). Their address is:

	1000 Gamma Drive
	Suite 504
	Pittsburgh, PA 15238
	Phone: 412 967 4040

Their business is selling ATM, but they may let you know how they set up
their demonstration.
