All: Do MPEG or MPEG-2 standards support closed caption signals? My concerns is missing closed caption signals on computer era but only analog video area. When VHS is converted into MPEG or MPEG2 format, all closed caption signal will be lost completely. Designers should implement closed captions into future MPEG standards or stick with analog TV. -- Tim Stark -- Timothy Stark Inet: tstark@clark.net

Both MPEG1 and MPEG2 allow for lots of out-of-band data (in fact, entire video or audio streams can be sent as out-of-band data). However, I don't know whether closed-captioning has specifically been addressed or standardized. I suspect it has been for MPEG2, since that is being touted as a broadcast standard. One possibility for the multiple simultaneous audio streams is simultaneous broadcast in multiple languages, btw. Just pick the correct audio channel(s) and listen in English, French, German, Spanish, whatever. -- ***** / walker@unx.sas.com *|_o_o|\\ Doug Walker< BIX, Portal: djwalker *|. o.| || \ CompuServe: 71165,2274 | o |// ====== Any opinions expressed are mine, not those of SAS Institute, Inc.

As far as I know there is not a direct provision for closed captioning in either MPEG-1 or -2 video, but broadcast system makers are mostly planning to convey this data through MPEG user data streams at the picture level.
