Below is a Call for Votes (CFV) on the creation of a new newsgroup called
'rec.music.songwriter'.  As a songwriter, I have often had the desire to
start such a forum and have talked with several of our readers with the
same desires (thanks for all the replys guys/gals!)  This newsgroup will
link together the chain of net user songwriters across the country/world.

There were a few questions sent to me regarding what would be allowed on
the board and I should clear those up at this time:

1)  Information on the board will not be limited to anything as long as
    it pertains to songwriting and the creation of music.  This will
    include anything anyone wants to post pertaining to music, lyrics,
    copyrights, music theory, styles, contacts, etc....

2)  What will not be appropiate material for the board will be anything
    that pertains to equipment and things that belong on other newsgroups.
    Please send information such as that to its respective newsgroup.

3)  SongWriter will be defined as anyone who writes music, lyrics, or
    both.  If you write just instrumentals that is fine too.


INTENT FOR THIS NEWSGROUP:

As everyone knows there are a lot of us songwriters out there in musicland.
Many great songs have and will be written over the years that have never
been heard because those writers didn't have the contacts needed to get
that demo listened to by the right people.  As an active member of NCSA
(Northern California SongWriter's Association), I will submit to the
newsgroup any information I come into contact with pertaining to contacts
and works in progress in the industry.  I have received letters from
people in similar organizations across the country and hope that all these
people will contribute as well.

Ex:  Subject: LOOKING FOR SONGS!!!
            : XXXXX Music Inc. is looking for pop ballads for a film
              project coming up.  Please send demos to:
              Johnny Publisher @ etc.,etc.,etc.
              (You all get the idea!)

Also, I am in the progress of getting our "new" newsgroup printed in
the NCSA newsletter.  If everyone does this with thier newsletters, we
will all have access to much more information and people.  Eventually, we
can get the publishers to post directly to the board when they are in
search of particular songs.  (I have already received letters from BMI
representatives and established writers supporting this group!!!)

Also, the newsgroup will provide those of us that enjoy colloborating
with access to many more people to work with and share our talents with
to create even better songs.

Writers with questions about music theory, lyrics, song structures,styles
or anything else can post their question to the board in hopes that
someone with the answer can help.

ASCAP and BMI information and reprentatives are very welcome, and anyone
else in the industry that can help writers (amateur and professional).

I was thinking that people who had material in question could post to the
board for suggestions and help, but the concern of people stealing
material has been brought to my attention.  Well folks, maybe this
should only be done thru mail/email with people you make contacts with
and establish some sort of relationship with.  SONG SHARKS ARE NOT
WELCOME.  The new copyright law states that any material containing
the word copyright or the circled "c" and the date and the name is
considered "protected" even before it is registered.  This should make
things a little more safe but still the decision to do any posting
will of course be up to the writer.  Again, SONG SHARKS ARE NOT WELCOME!

Anyway, this will serve as a Call For Votes for the new newsgroup

(Voting will take place for 20-30 days starting today 9/26/91)

Please post your vote and clearly distinguish as a "yes" or "no" vote.
Any ideas you may have about uses for the newgroup that I have not
mentioned here can be included with you votes and I will set up the
guidelines when the board is created.  Please only vote once.  Several
times during the voting period I will post the ongoing results of the
voting to:  news.announce.newsgroups.
