              HIGH SPEED (10 Mbits/sec) WAN
         VMEbus COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER FROM
               PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGIES

The Computer Products Division of Performance Technologies, Rochester,
NY, U.S.A. has introduced a new four port Wide Area Network controller
for extended speed performance. The product, Model PT-VME340, is a
state-of-the-art VMEbus Serial I/O module designed for T1/E1++ rates
and is the latest in a family of synchronous VMEbus communication
controllers dating back to 1987. While there are many I/O controllers
currently available which will operate at T1 or E1 data rates, they
often cannot sustain these rates for useful serial data communication.
The PT-VME340 has been designed to support serial I/O rates up to 10
Mbits/sec - well above the 1.5 and 2.54 Mbit rates of T1/E1.

The PT-VME340's serial I/O is built around the contemporary Zilog
16C32 Integrated Serial Communications Controller (ISCC). This
communication interface is the next generation of serial communication
silicon that is based on many of the features and functions of the
popular Z8530 Serial Communications Controller (SCC) found in
thousands of present day applications. In addition to the many
"8530-like" features, the 16C32 includes an eight channel, 16 bit I/O
DMA controller with "chained Link List capabilities" for support of
sustained high speed data movement. The SIO throughput of the
PT-VME340 is in excess of 4 Mbits/sec on all four ports (full duplex)
and up to 10 Mbits/sec on one port (full duplex).

The physical communication line interface is accomplished via the PTI
Line Adapter Boards (LABs). These business card sized modules provide
a convenient plug-in dual channel interface that resides on the
PT-VME340 controller module. These LABs are used on a variety of PTI
communication products and currently include RS- 232C, RS-422, RS-485,
Mil Std 188C/114 and V.35 interfaces. The LAB modules can be changed
in field and also offer the option to easily intermix multiple
communication line interfaces on the PT- VME340 controller.

The PT-VME340 controller's onboard intelligence is based on a Motorola
68EC030 MPU running a speed of 40 MHz. This processing power provides
ample onboard capability for high speed execution of communication
protocol code that may reside on the module. Other architectural
elements of the controller include: one or four MBytes of onboard DRAM
and a high performance VME64 VMEbus interface. This interface
includes a performance oriented thirty- two bit DMA controller,
message passing mailbox facilities, Location monitor, VMEbus
Interrupter, Interrupt Handler and VMEbus Data Xfer capability of 50
MBytes/sec+ in VME64 mode.

Software optionally available with the PT-VME340 includes a variety of
advanced communications packages that have been developed by UconX, a
subsidiary of Performance Technologies. These packages include
ProtoPack(tm) a basic operating environment supporting Async, BiSync
and HDLC/SDLC Device Drives; ProtoKit(tm), a comprehensive STREAMS
based communication development environment, X.25 based on the well
known SpiderX.25 and Frame Relay.

The basic PT-VME340 is priced at $2295 (qty 100 units). Delivery will
begin in November 1992.

Performance Technologies designs, manufactures and markets a variety
of products for SBus, VMEbus, VERSAbus, Qbus and Multibus. The
Company has sales offices and distributors across North America and is
represented by agents and distributors throughout the world.
