HP INTRODUCES DUAL-CARTRIDGE HP DESKJET FAMILY PRINTERS
FOR BLACK AND COLOR PRINTING
FROM PCs AND MACINTOSH COMPUTERS
PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 5, 1992 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
introduced the first affordable laser-quality, plain-paper personal
printers that offer simultaneous true black and color printing: the HP
DeskJet 550C printer for PCs and the HP DeskWriter 550C printer for
Macintosh computers.
The new printers are easier to use and offer more fonts and
better paper handling than the HP DeskJet 500C and HP DeskWriter C
printers. They provide 300 dots-per-inch resolution for black and
color, text and graphics and use HP-developed thermal inkjet
technology.
Both printers are $1,099 (U.S. list) and are expected to be
available worldwide on Nov. 1. HP also is reducing the list prices of
the HP DeskJet 500C and HP DeskWriter C printers, from $1,095 to $779,
effective today. All of these printers offer an industry-leading
three-year limited warranty.
Improved Document Quality
A key benefit of the new printers is improved document quality.
Users can print true black and color on the same page, because the
printers hold two print cartridges simultaneously -- one black and one
color. The dual-cartridge implementation also means a merged text and
color-graphics page prints up to four times faster than on the HP
DeskJet 500C and HP DeskWriter C printers.
Text print speed for both new printers is 3 pages per minute. A
full color page can be printed in approximately 4 to 7 minutes,
depending on application and ink density.
More Fonts
For Macintosh users, the HP DeskWriter 550C printer includes the
same 35 scalable fonts found in the Apple Personal LaserWriter NT and
NTR printers. The printer ships with a QuickDraw driver that uses
Intellifont font-scaling technology to create fonts in any size up to
250 points.
Typefaces included are Times, Helvetica(tm), Courier, Symbol, ITC
Avante Garde Gothic(R), ITC Bookman(R), New Century Schoolbook,
Palatino(tm), ITC Zapf Chancery(R) and ITC Zapf Dingbats(R).
Treatments and styles available include plain, bold, italic and
bold-italic, and outline, shadow and underline.
The HP DeskWriter 550C printer's standard font offering includes
the seven typefaces available in the HP DeskWriter font collection.
This font collection is available as an option for the HP DeskWriter
and HP DeskWriter C printers, which come standard with four typefaces.
Enhanced Color Capability
Customers can print documents in virtually any color, shade or
hue with the HP DeskJet 550C and HP DeskWriter 550C printers. The
printers can create more than 16 million colors (depending on the
software) by dithering the three process-color inks (cyan, magenta,
yellow) in the color print cartridge.
Both printers offer HP's color matching system that in one easy
step optimally matches the colors seen on a computer monitor to the
colors printed on paper. The feature is supported through the
environment drivers that ship with the printers (Windows 3.1/3.0 for
the HP DeskJet 550C printer; QuickDraw for the HP DeskWriter 550C
printer).
Improved Paper Handling
HP DeskJet 550C and HP DeskWriter 550C printer customers can
print on a wider variety of media sizes, including envelopes and
executive-size (7 1/4 in. X 10 1/2 in.) paper. A new paper-handling
mechanism allows automatic feeding of envelopes as well as letter-,
legal-, A4- and executive-size paper. The standard paper tray adjusts
for all of these media sizes. It holds up to 100 sheets of paper or
transparency film or 20 envelopes.
HP's LX JetSeries glossy paper, introduced with the HP PaintJet
XL300 color printer for customers who want a high-impact photographic
look to their output, also is supported by the two new printers.
HP's Inkjet Products Group (IPG), the world's leading supplier of
inkjet printers, has sold more than 5 million printers since the first
one was introduced in 1984. HP's inkjet technology, which is used in
a variety of products >From facsimile machines to plotters, was
developed at HP Laboratories and HP's Inkjet Technology Centers.
IPG's products are sold worldwide through computer dealers and
value-added resellers. IPG has divisions in Barcelona, Spain;
Corvallis, Ore.; San Diego; Singapore; and Vancouver, Wash.
