ROCKWELL INTRODUCES LOWEST-COST INTEGRATED MODEM CHIPSET WITH 9600BPS SEND/RECEIVE FAX AND V.22 BIS/V.42 BIS DATA Available now, the RC229ATF/2 features the Rockwell Protocol Interface supported by major software vendors * NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (November 16, 1992) -- Taking the lead in providing the lowest system cost, highest performance modem technology for computer communications, Rockwell International Corporation's Digital Communications Division (DCD) today announced the first integrated two-chip 9600 bps send/receive fax, low-speed data modem chipset. Targeted at the high-volume, low-cost integrated data/fax modem market, the RC229ATF/2 provides the lowest-systems cost, lowest-power and highest functionality product offering for computer communications. The RC229ATF/2 also is the first integrated 9600 bps send/receive low speed data modem chipset which allows for the implementation of V.42 and MNP 2-4 error correction, V.42 bis and MNP 5 data compression in the host software application via the Rockwell Protocol Interface (RPI*/patent pending). Supported by host software packages now available from major software vendors, the RPI reduces the component count of a PC- card modem significantly, enabling manufacturers to pass along cost and power reductions to the end user. With the RC229ATF/2, Rockwell offers the lowest, total system cost for an integrated data/fax modem chipset with error correction and data compression. "Rockwell's integrated RC224ATF (2400 bps data, 9600/4800 bps send/receive fax) has pervaded the market since its introduction in September, 1990," says Tony Zuccarino, product manager. "In response to the modem manufacturers' need to upgrade to higher speed facsimile receive capabilities, the RC229ATF/2 offers the lowest system-cost implementation possible . " The compact, low-power RC229ATF/2 modem is a two-device set consisting of a microcontroller packaged in a 68-pin PLCC or 80-pin PQFP and modem data pump available in a 68-pin PLCC or a 100-pin PQFP. In the worldwide configuration, the RC229ATF/2-W provides maximum flexibility to comply with international CCITT standards V.23, V.22 bis, V.22, V.21 for data. The EIA/TIA Class 1 facsimile control interface enables the modem to send and receive Group 3 fax (V.29, V.27 ter, V.21 Ch. 2) using an AT+F command set. In addition, error corrected mode (ECM) facsimile operation for cellular applications and binary file transfer (BFT) techniques can be implemented with the high speed HDLC mode. Features of the RC229ATF/2 include auto-dial and auto-answer capabilities, data/fax discrimination, integrated call progress and dialing, programmable speaker volume control, sleep and wake-up modes. The RC229ATF/2 operates at 245mW and requires a single +5 VDC power supply. Backed by Rockwell's five-year warranty, the RC229ATF/2 is available now. The 10,000-quantity price is $19.85. *Software support The following are current software vendors supporting the RPI with data communications packages: Smith Micro Software, Irvine, Calif., Tradewind Software, Glendora, Calif., Bit Software, Fremont, Calif., MagicSoft/Word Perfect, Orem, Utah, SoftKlone, Tallahassee, Fla., Phoenix Corp., Norwood, Mass.
