With V6.0, the TekXpress terminals perform at a rate of up to 105,000 X-stones. This makes Tektronix the first major vendor to deliver X terminals that break the 100,000 X-stone barrier. As the broadest range of X terminals in the market, the TekXpress family includes the XP10 Series, built around an optimized graphics processor for the cost-sensitive commercial market, and the RISC-based XP330 Series for technical or high-end commercial application users. The new V6.0 software allows system administrators to integrate TekXpress X terminals easily into all major host environments, including Sun, DEC and IBM, as well as sites with a mix of platforms. "According to our research, more than 65 percent of today's networked environments are heterogeneous," said Stephen King, director of marketing and engineering, Tektronix Network Displays Division. "X terminals let users run multiple applications simultaneously off different hosts; our new software provides the wide range of compatibility features users then need to access these applications transparently." Tektronix' new V6.0 software also includes a special Sun Optimization Kit, aimed at Sun Microsystems' workstation customers. "Sun continues to be the preeminent vendor of workstations. With our TekXpress X terminals, systems administrators can transparently add more seats at a much lower cost," King said. The Sun Optimization Kit comes with a full implementation of Sun's Open Look Window Manager as a local client and support for native Sun scalable fonts. Network File System (NFS) boot capabilities are also available. The kit enhancements, coupled with Tektronix' Sun-specific installation tape, Sun-compatible 1152 x 900 screen resolution displays and optional Sun/UNIX keyboard, provide users with an ideal feature set for Sun environments. In addition, Tektronix is offering a separate DEC Optimization Kit, comprising DECnet, LAT and a full implementation of OSF/Motif Window Manager as a local client. Combined with local VT220 emulation, DEC- specific installation tapes, native DEC font support and an optional VT220 keyboard, the Tektronix DEC Optimization Kit allows DEC users to migrate easily to X terminals. The V6.0 software also supports X11 Release 5, the latest X Window System distributed by the MIT X Consortium; a protocol independent login chooser, which allows users to connect easily to multiple hosts; XIE document imaging capabilities; Serial Xpress, a compressed X protocol that can be used to access and process data from remote sites; and Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MIB II. For hardware, V6.0 includes EPROM Flash memory, which lets users store fonts, frequently used local clients or the X server in local flash memory for instant recall. The feature is an easy, cost-effective way for users to update and configure memory. The XP10 Series will also now have all three LAN connectors for Thinnet, Thicknet and Twisted-Pair Ethernet standard to simplify customer configuration. "We've optimized our software and hardware to again deliver the widest selection of fully-compatible, high-performance X terminals at today's most aggressive price points," King added. List prices for the TekXpress family of X terminals start at $995 for monochrome and $1,995 for color X terminals. Tektronix' V6.0 software and hardware will be available in December 1992 through the company's distribution network of a direct sales force, systems integrators and value- added resellers.
