Boulder - Nov 23, 1992. MetaCard Corporation today announced the availability of MetaCard 1.2, an upgrade to one of UNIXWORLD magazine's 10 Best Products of 1992. MetaCard is now available on IBM RS/6000, Silicon Graphics IRIS, and Data General AViiON workstations, in addition to the 6 platforms supported in previous releases: SPARC, Sun 3, DECstation, HP-9000/300 and 700, and SCO Open Desktop. MetaCard is a hypermedia/Rapid Application Development environment similar to Apple/Claris Corporation's HyperCard, but with a Motif interface. Also unlike HyperCard, MetaCard supports the full range of GUI techniques including dialogs and menus, has 24 bit color support, and built in support for interprocess communication. MetaCard has a wide range of uses, from developing GUI applications and GUI front ends to shell scripts and other utilities, to producing help systems and Computer Based Training (CBT) systems, to producing and distributing electronic documents. It can also be used to develop presentations, product demonstrations, and application prototypes. Key Features * Easy to use yet powerful interactive GUI development environment, with an integral interpreted scripting language. * Motif interface supports construction of Motif compatible applications including support for all button and field styles, pulldown and popup menus, and all forms of dialogs. * Text editing tools that support multiple typefaces, sizes and colors, subscript and superscript, automatic scrolling, search, sort, and hypertext links. * A complete set of full 24 bit color image editing/painting tools support creation and editing of images, icons, cursors, brush shapes, and fill patterns. * Sophisticated color image management system allows display of full color images and icons on 4 bit VGA and even monochrome screens. * Visual effects and double-buffered object manipulation and animation are available on all platforms, no special hardware or software is required. * Object architecture, scripting language, and external procedure call interface are source compatible with Claris Corporation's HyperCard. * MetaCard scripts execute 2-4 times faster than the same scripts in HyperCard on comparable hardware (Sun 3 vs. Mac II). On most UNIX workstations, the advantage is even greater due to the much greater performance of the hardware itself. * MetaCard stacks are portable among all 9 supported platforms. * Royalty free distribution of applications and hypermedia documents. Single user licenses of MetaCard are $495 and can be used on any platform. Site licenses are available from $1,800 for five users up to $15,000 for 250 users. Educational users will receive a 50% percent discount. Upgrades to MetaCard engines will be free to licensed users within the 1.X series of releases. Unlimited technical support is free via electronic mail to all licensed users. Non-toll-free telephone support is provided during normal business hours (MDT) for a limited time only.
