NEW RARP SERVER AVAILABLE ============================== Turbosoft Pty Ltd today announces the release of new server software for the Internet standard RARP protocol, to allow Internet hosts to find their protocol address at boot time from a network server. As well as the standard RARP functionality, with explicit mappings between IP numbers and hardware addresses hard-coded into the RARP table, RARPSERVER from Turbosoft allows a range of IP numbers to be allocated dynamically on a first-come-first-served basis. This provides extremely simple management of IP numbers in large sites, as only the end numbers in the range need be specified. The RARPSERVER will track the allocation of each number and poll each machine periodically to determine when the IP number is no longer required, when it will be returned to the pool and made available for allocation to another client. This new mode is invaluable in sites where IP numbers are running out, and only a small sub-set of machines are using TCP/IP at any one time. For instance, in a university environment or corporate classroom where different groups of machines are used at different times during the day, only enough IP addresses need be reserved for the maximum number that will be used concurrently. Network management of IP numbers is made extremely easy, as new hosts can be added to the network and old ones removed without the RARPSERVER's tables needing to be touched in any way. Re-numbering networks becomes a snap - only the central RARPSERVER need be reconfigured, and each RARP client is automatically reconfigured when it next boots, without the administrator having to find, coordinate and configure the several hundred or thousand small machines such as PCs that may be connected throughout the network. Any site with large numbers of PCs will benefit from using the RARPSERVER to centralise management of their IP address space. RARPSERVER software runs on a standard MSDOS PC, and is quite capable of managing a large network on a floppy-disk-only 512K AT - you probably have one gathering dust as a doorstop. Up to 12,000 IP numbers can be managed on a standard 640K PC. Ethernet and Token Ring architectures are supported using any card with a Packet Driver interface (supplied). Also supplied are Dan Lanciani's ODIPKT shim and Joe Doupnik's DIS_PKT shim for interfacing to cards with ODI or NDIS drivers. Fully-featured demonstration versions are available through UUENCODEd Email, unfortunately not for anonymous FTP.
