Alsys Expanding Product Scope Alsys Announces New, PCTE-Based CASE Environment for Ada and C Development Burlington, MA November 17, 1992 In a major step forward, Alsys today announced the first commercially available open, distributed Integrated Project Support Environment (IPSE), based on international standards such as PCTE (Portable Common Tool Environment) and UNIX(tm). Called FreedomWorks(tm), the system integrates and controls specification, design, coding, testing, configuration management, project management, and other tools and data within the software life cycle for Ada and C language development. FreedomWorks dramatically increases the quality of applications and productivity of software engineers by integrating CASE tools, project resource management and process control. According to Alsys Inc. President, Kathy Weidman, "We strongly believe that FreedomWorks provides the breakthrough needed to enhance the productivity of software developers. It is the type of integrated, open product our customers have needed but haven't found among closed, proprietary systems." All project information is stored in a single, distributed, object-oriented repository that enables graphical, windows-based access to any information required over the life of the project. This PCTE-compliant repository is unique to FreedomWorks and enables the storage and retrieval of objects that may be geographically dispersed or located on multiple servers. FreedomWorks also includes security features, optionally limiting access to different stored objects. Through this unique data integration capability, FreedomWorks also supports process control procedures adhering to standard development methods, including MIL-STD-2167A and DO-178A. These procedures can also be customized to accommodate the requirements of an organization. This process control support enhances cooperative efforts between software engineers by automating adherence to standards and company-specific procedures. FreedomWorks supports most popular CASE tools, such as Cadre's Teamwork, IDE's Software Through Pictures, Interleaf and Frame Technology's FrameMaker, adding power and the convenience of using familiar tools for development and project management. End users are able to easily encapsulate additional tools of their choice allowing investment in software, tools, and staff training to be protected. The FreedomWorks PCTE repository provides a secure mechanism to store and manipulate objects shared between projects, facilitating the reuse of software components. The relationships between the "typed" objects in the repository managed by FreedomWorks maintain traceability -- supporting reuse of code, requirements, designs, and tests. Networks based on standards such as NFS and TCP/IP are used to distribute the repository, permitting performance optimization by the FreedomWorks administration tools. "FreedomWorks forms the top tier of our WorldCASE strategy, breaking the barriers of traditional proprietary IPSEs. Alsys is |committed to providing better interoperability of CASE tools through open standards. Further, customers starting their development at any level of WorldCASE tools will have a compatible upgrade path to FreedomWorks," said Tom Erickson, Alsys Group Vice-President of Marketing. Weidman adds, "FreedomWorks is the next logical step in our product evolution. We have based our reputation on the development of robust, leading edge software engineering solutions. CASE and IPSE environments help our customers to further their competitive advantage, maximizing their efficiency in developing software by harnessing the best software engineering tools available." FreedomWorks is available immediately. UNIX platforms to be supported include: Sun SPARC, IBM RS/6000, and HP 9000 Series 700. Complete training and consulting services are also provided. Founded in 1980, Alsys specializes in software engineering solutions. Based in Burlington, MA, Alsys is a Thomson-CSF company with offices located worldwide. --30-- Editor's Note: PCTE is an official NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) and ECMA (European Computer Manufacturer's Association) standard for portability of CASE tools and data integration.
