Re: Taping PBS programs I would like to know if there is some special permission that can be obtained in writing for ACM groups, we're an institutional member, to copy ACM shows? A recent note from Blanche Cohen of Denver University said "each local Group is allowed to tape the show direct from the PBS show for use as long as we do NOT charge." Our audio-visual / TV services will tape a PBS program to show ONCE in a single class, and the tape is erased at the end of 30 days. Following the 1978 copyright law, "the television center will record off-air and make available to the College community only those programs for which permission to copy has been obtained by law or otherwise. Under existing copyright law, these routinely include: ... programs which are demonstrably otherwise not available for purchase or rental; programs or portions of programs the use of which qualify for "Fair Use" classification under the copyright law." We were NOT able to have TV personnel tape the recent 5-part program partially sponsored by the ACM! Some faculty made personal copies but the TV Center would not reproduce them. If they knew we were to show one of those particular episodes in class from a faculty copy, I'm sure they would not deliver the equipment to do so! I'm a firm believer in intellectual property rights as they pertain to printed and electronic forms of expression, but if we have a right as an institutional member of the ACM to reproduce and show these programs, I want to know and want said permission in writing (e-mail doesn't come on a letter head)!
