The Department of Computer Science at the University of Montana is looking
for high quality applicants to fill several research and teaching
assistant positions anticipated for Fall 1998. The RA positions are
associated with a variety of externally funded projects. The TA positions
involve teaching CS service courses. Applicants should be interested in
pursuing an advanced degree in Computer Science. The equivalent of an
undergraduate degree in CS is a general prerequisite, but exceptions can
be made for outstanding candidates with background and interest in
interdisciplinary and/or applied areas such as mathematics, physics,
geology, or natural resource related disciplines.

The RA positions fall into three general areas:

1. Object-oriented software design and development in interdisciplinary
applications. These include distributed decision support systems, data
management, image analysis, and multimedia development. Current funding is
primarily in natural resource management, ecosystem analysis, and
geological applications. Strong CS background is preferred, but applicants
with some CS/programming, STRONG applications background, and interest in
MS/CS will also be considered.

2. Machine learning with an emphasis in interdisciplinary applications.
Current funding comes from a variety of applied and basic research
sources. Current applications include digital image analysis,
geo-petroleum, information retrieval, biochemistry, and others. Strong CS
background is preferred, but applicants with some CS/programming, STRONG
applications background, and interest in MS/CS will also be considered.

Joint programs with other departments, such as forestry, wildlife studies,
geology, environmental studies, fine arts/media arts, etc., are also a
possibility.

3. Object-oriented analysis, design, and implementation for the
construction and use of scientist-friendly programming tools to be used
with serial and parallel computing architectures. Application areas tend
to center around geophysical problem domains. Candidates with strong
math/science and programming backgrounds are preferred.

All of the positions described above require interaction with
interdisciplinary groups, and the production and use of real software.
Joint graduate degree programs (MS or Ph.D.) with other departments are
possible, such as forestry, wildlife studies, geology, environmental
studies, and fine arts/media arts. Many positions offer or require some
travel, typically in the form of internships or summer residency at
national laboratories.

For general information about the CS department, its faculty, and its
graduate program, look at the department web site "www.cs.umt.edu". For
more specific information, send a summary of your interests and
qualifications to Professor Ray Ford, at "ford@cs.umt.edu".
