Finding Out What's Out There

The collection of electronic networks known as the
Internet is a vast galaxy of resource information just 
waiting to be explored. At this time, this galaxy is littered
with resource nuggets from over 250 libraries, campus-wide 
information systems, and databases. 

This seminar identifies some of the information resources that 
are available throughout the Internet and provides directions to 
make the routes to these treasures easier to traverse.  Because 
of the vast opportunities, this is not an easy task.  This 
seminar presents some of the techniques used to locate these 
resources so attendees can tap this network gold mine and thus 
make their work and education environments richer.

For the purposes of this seminar, the BITNET network is considered
to be a part of the larger Internet and this combination will be
referred to as the 'network'.

This one day seminar is intended for network information support 
people who provide end user support for the use of the Internet.

Instructors: Jim Gerland and Deborah Newkirk

Credentials:

Jim Gerland is the Manager of Network User Support in Academic 
Services at the State University of New York at Buffalo.  He is 
responsible for the consulting, training and documentation of the 
use of the network for instructional and research use by faculty, 
staff and students.  Jim has presented sessions at numerous 
national conferences on network information and end user support.

Deborah Newkirk is an independent consultant in Anchorage, Alaska.
She was formerly the head of the VAX systems staff at the University
of Arizona in Tucson.  She was responsible for the care and feeding 
of the VAXcluster supporting instructional and research computing 
at the central computer center.  Deborah has presented numerous 
sessions at DECUS Symposia on VAX system management, end user 
support and Academic Computing.

Prerequisites of Attendees:

Attendees should have some understanding of either BITNET or the 
Internet and should have some type of network access at their 
institution.  Experience managing a VMS system and installing 
programs and utilities is desirable.  An interest in global 
networking is an ideal preparation for this seminar.
