Central New York Local Users Group
			Fifth Annual Regional Conference

			Tuesday, November 17
			8 A.M to 5 P.M
			Skydeck Level
			The Carousel Center
			Syracuse, NY

The Central New York DECUS Local Users Group is holding its fifth annual
Regional Conference on Tuesday, 17 November, at the Skydeck (6th floor) of the
Carousel Center, on the shore of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. The
program, below, covers a variety of topics designed to appeal to administrators
and decision makers as well as to technical users. Following the introductory
address, attendees will be free to attend either of two streams of
presentations. This year's attendees should find the program, which covers a
variety of new computing technologies, to be as timely, informative and
stimulating as any we have held. We plan to have at least some of the products
that we will be presenting up and running after the sessions, when you may
meet with our speakers to get the answers to those questions you didn't have a
chance to ask during the presentation.
DECUS members and non-members alike are welcome to join us for this exciting
program. The registration fee for this year's all day program is $25.00
($22.50 for preregistrants) per person. A buffet lunch catered by Malarkeys
of the Carousel Center will be provided registrants. To preregister, simply
complete and return the form below. Make your checks payable to:

Central New York Local Users Group

Registration also will be open at the door but remember that the fee will be
$25.00 for walk-in registrants. The reduced $22.50 fee only applies if we
obtain your preregistration by 10 November, a real bargain for such a powerful
program. A registration form is attached. Feel free to copy it and to pass
it to your colleagues. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Keynote Address
Alpha Q What's it all about.
Carl Ralston
Senior UNY District Technical Consultant,
Digital Equipment Corporation
Alpha is Digital's 64-bit RISC computing architecture, the world's fastest
microprocessor. It is unbiased toward any operating system or programming
language, and can be licensed from Digital. It is an industry leading
technology for the rest of the 90s and the next century. This talk will cover
the announcement of the initial set of Alpha products, planning for Alpha
(including migration, Alpha-ready programs, and time-tables), and the benefits
to the end user of Alpha technology.

Concurrent Session I

Windows NT on Alpha
Randy Stuckless, Systems Engineer, and Lynne Johnson, Microsoft Corporation.
will provide an overview of Microsoft's vision of desktop computing. They will
highlight the new Windows NT architecture, which will be running on Alpha.
Windows NT is one of the key components in their desktop computing vision.
They will review their approach to client-server computing. They will discuss
their work group solutions, and provide live demos for you to examine.

Getting Started with AI/Expert Systems
Dr. Mohan Tanniru, School of Management, Syracuse University
will describe how organizations are continuously challenged to look at new
technologies to improve their operations and remain competitive. However, the
rapidity with which these new technologies are introduced and promoted are
making organizations concerned about their effective introduction and
management, specifically when these call for new ways of thinking, developing
and implementing information systems. One such technology, which has been
described to be different from conventional data processing technologies, is
Expert Systems - a subclass of AI technologies. A quick overview of Expert
Systems is presented so an organization can assess its role in application
development. Some strategies an organization can follow to successfully
introduce this technology to its development staff and user community are then
presented. Case studies are used to illustrate some of these strategies. The
presentation concludes by describing some cost-effective ways of implementing
these strategies.

Concurrent Session II

RAID and Digital's Vision of Mass Storage
Marilyn Fedele, Hardware Product Manager, Mass Storage Marketing, Digital
Equipment Corporation,
will explain how RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) can be viewed as
a family of methods for common control of disk drives to achieve a desired set
of properties. In this session, the presenter reviews the storage "models"
defined by the developers of RAID technology, discusses the tradeoffs among
them, and explains why certain ones are prime candidates for implementation
while others remain academic topics. The presenter also discusses tradeoffs
between hardware and software implementations of RAID. What the next
generation of storage solutions provide? This session talks about the future
technology of storage solutions from the desk top to the data center. Storage
technology is exploding; new concepts such as RAID, WORM, and network storage
servers offer opportunities as well as pitfalls. Hear for yourself exactly
what Digital's Vision for the future of mass storage is.

Open for business: Executive IS Planning.
Bruce L. Adams, Corporate Open Systems Consultant, Digital Equipment
Corporation,
will discuss the market shift towards distributed systems models within the
context of Open Systems and Standards. The presentation describes market
pressures and customer demands that are behind the move toward "Open Systems".
What are the key factors IS executives need to consider in developing
business architectures that will take them into the 21st Century? Open Systems
are presented as a much wider topic than simply operating systems software.
Rather we discuss today's issues in terms of people, business, and technology,
and their important relationship in customers building open systems.

Concurrent Session III

Fiber Distributed Data Interface
Sharon O'Neill and Terry Robinson, FDDI and GIGAswitch Product Managers,Digital
Equipment Corporation,
will explain how FDDI speeds moving large amounts of data over long distances.
Digital's FDDI product set provides the building blocks for the 100Mbit/sec,
high speed LAN. The FDDI backbone provides high bandwidth capability to link
multiple existing LANs to form an integrated network. The FDDI work group
configuration supports multimedia applications to the desktop. Switch
technology offers exciting possibilities in high performance and scaleable
bandwidth to meet current and future application needs within a network
infrastructure. Digital's GIGAswitch offers aggregate bandwidth of 3.6 Gb/sec,
switching industry standard FDDI now, and offering migration of higher
bandwidth interconnects as other standards mature. This session will focus on
the benefits and features of Digital's FDDI Product Set and Switching
Technology. It will include network integration of existing LANs to FDDI, work
groups for network intensive applications, FDDI-Switching solutions, and
general future directions.

The SAS System for Information Delivery
Cathy Macall, Account Manager, and Margaret Crevar, Sr. Marketing Analyst, SAS
Institute,
will present the SAS system, long considered the de facto industry standard
for data analysis, as a tool for turning data into usable information so that
better, more informed decisions can be made by an organization. The SAS
Application Model, consisting of data access, data management, data analysis,
and data presentation will illustrate how the SAS System for Information
Delivery can benefit an organization enterprise-wide.

Concurrent Session IV

Data Management on MUMPS
Jed Corman, InterSystems Corporation,
will presents the advantages of data management using the MUMPS language. The
MUMPS language integrates a hierarchical database management system. By
treating the database as a set of subscripted variable arrays accessible to
the programmer without any special OPEN, USE or CLOSE commands, MUMPS make
data handling simple. This presentation will briefly review the MUMPS
language. It will focus on the logical representation and physical storage of
data. Finally, it will consider the "relationalizing" of MUMPS.
