   Wouldn't most of this question depend on what vax version of apl you 
are running ???  What does the terminal support section of that software say ?

  I either case, STSC APL for the IBM-PC or MAC (the mac version was frozen
last I heard, due to lack of interest, but it does still work on lots of macs,
and probably would work with mac-X, is it does work...  The only problem I
had with the mac version is a keyboard problem, I couldn't get it to work
right with the enhanced keybaord).  I have used the IBM version only with
a rs232 (serial) interface, it could with with tcp/ip, and it may be supported
by now...
   On the pc version, there are several different video modes, and emulation 
modes for use with different apl packages...
