An Introduction to Capacity Planning
Capacity planning, once though to be a domain of large mainframe data
processing departments, has become a requirement for many smaller
shops. Today's data processing environments seem to be characterized
by high demand and low budgets. The increasing performance of
workstations and minicomputers, as well as tighter budgets, has brought
many departmental systems (which were often considered to be too small
to require any formal planning) under much closer scrutiny.
Capacity planning allows people responsible for delivering data
processing services to take a pro-active, rather than reactive, posture
toward meeting future demand. Capacity planning also allows
information managers to manage by fact the data collected in a capacity
planning process can be used to support a request or defend a decision.
This presentation will explain the different phases of capacity
planning and describe where it fits into an information processing
environment. Since capacity planning relies on statistical history for
predicting future demands and performance, examples of the types of
data required and its analysis will be discussed. Practical
suggestions for starting a capacity planning program in a typical
department, including estimates of the manpower required to implement
it, will also be presented. Examples of results from a capacity
planning project will be shown and some of the software tools available
to assist in capacity planning will be described.
Stay Tuned, Site Management LIG presents...
Capacity Planning for VMS
On November 10 at 7:00 P.M. at the Medical College of Wisconsin (Room
C-232), Chris Kraidich will present a follow-up to the capacity
planning introduction he gave at the October 20 LUG meeting. The
session will begin with a brief overview of capacity planning, with the
balance of time spent on covering what aspects of a computer system
should be measured during capacity planning and for what purpose.
Issues such as suitable sample periods for statistics and useful
methods of presenting the statistics for analysis will be discussed.
Another major topic will be how collected statistics can best be used
to predict future demand and assess current performance. A no-cost
approach to capacity planning using the VMS MONITOR utility and a DCL
data collector will be presented, including examples of statistical
output in the form of chart and graphs.
Database Design & Application LIG News
The August 12 Database Design & Application LIG kickoff meeting
attracted a modest group of attendees representing many large & small
companies in the area. The evening began with a discussion of the
format & focus for the new LIG (the consensus was to try to hold
meetings on Wednesday nights at least once a month to present/discuss
relational database topics). Later, everyone talked about how they
currently design, use, or are planning to implement Rdb, Oracle and
other database/query products to support applications or service PC
end-user computing needs.
After he captivated the group several times, Tim Sharko of Miller
Brewing agreed to present an overview of how Rdb is employed/managed at
Miller to service the firm's many information needs, from product
scheduling to end-user computing. Tim also intends to share his
experience with upgrading to DEC's latest release of Rdb, Version 4.1.
Tim's talk is scheduled for November 11 at 7:00 P.M. at the Medical
College of Wisconsin.
