10/13/92 -- >>>>>> The October meeting agenda is as follows:

Todd Whiting - from Raxco (in Utah) will present the topic

"Policy: The Foundation of a Secure System"

The security issues that confront our computer systems are not so much
a war of high tech but of low tech business decisions that have to
be made.

Todd will discuss the role of Security Policies and their electronic
implementation for today's computers and network systems.

--

LUG ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD THIS MEETING.

You must be present to VOTE for the new two year term of LUG Chair
and Vice Chair.

Be sure to come and participate in this spirited election of DFWLUG
staff positions

--

Robert Eden will also have the Spring/Fall 91 DECUS Symposia Software on
9-track reel tapes. Please Don't bring your 9 Tracks to trade, Robert
says he has enough to just give away. (but if you would like to donate
1 TK50 in trade...;-)

--

Lon Crozier will have membership forms and DFWLUG BBS membership forms
available at the meeting. LUG membership and meeting attendance is always
free but your $10.00/year contribution gets you a personal/private account
on the DFWLUG BBS and helps keep the LUG moving.

Help us to help you, a little bit goes a long way.

--

The library area will have copies of technical reference and update books
for DECUS members to take home. *Thanks DEC*

POPCORN and Soft drinks will also be be furnished courtesy of Digital.

*Greetings from the DFWLUG*

The DFWLUG is celebrating our 10th anniversary October 10th at
White Rock Lake in Dallas. As we celebrate 10 years of DECUS
in North Texas the LUG has undergone many changes. Members
come and go, speakers come and go, and the computer industry
changes but one thing has stayed the same our unopposed chairman
Stuart Renes.

Stuart is stepping downs from the reins of leadership after 10 years
but his time with us has left us much in his debt and much changed
as DFWLUG has grown since 1982.

Stuart has stepping down in the same month as Ken Olsen but we still
hope to use his experience, dedication and expertise as the grand
emeritus and founder of the DFWLUG. Old DECUS folks never really
retire, they simply change jobs for a couple years and come back again.

Our sincere thanks and all our best Stuart, we'll miss your leadership
but will enjoy your support as the most extra-ordinary DFWLUG member
ever.

The picnic is going to be a legendary celebration for a legendary LUG
chairman.

The DFWLUG is very excited about our NEXT 10 years of DECUS and our
group's technical excellence too, but before we travel that great
adventure we're going to celebrate our LAST 10 years in style.

BBQ, Awards, Music will start off the festivities. DFWLUG limited edition
coffee mugs, posters, balloon animals and family fun will provide the zip
to make this a picnic to remember.

Digital has graciously donated a 19" Color VXT2000 Xwindow terminal,
an Infoserver, and PCs as prizes for a special DFWLUG raffle to be held
at the picnic. (Sorry, only current DFWLUG members will be allowed to
participate in the raffle.)

With a picnic on Saturday and our regular DFWLUG meeting on Tuesday
night we are going to get a double dose of DECUS this month -- But
it's only once every 10 years!

See you at the picnic!

 Digital - K.O. speaks
	{The Boston Globe, 1-Oct-92, p. 57}
Digital founder distances himself from his company

On his last official day as president of Digital Equipment Corp., founder
Kenneth H. Olsen sought yesterday to distance himself from the $14 billion
company he founded and from his successor, who is scheduled to make his first
 public statements this morning.
The 66-year-old Olsen has not spoken with reporters since he shocked the
computer industry by stepping down July 16. Sitting in shirtsleeves on a bench
outside his new office, Olsen talked for about 25 minutes during the chilly
afternoon, speaking in reflective tones with sporadic flashes of irritability.
"I would have like to have left after the next turnaround," said Olsen who
refused to answer directly as to whether he had been fired by Digital's
board. "I do not run from problems." He added that "the stories are not all
true. But they are not the sort of thing you comment on. Once you start, the
 details go on forever."
The nation's second-largest computer maker has has posted three straight
quarters of operating losses, and reported a whopping loss of nearly $2
billion for its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended June 27. The number
included a $1.5 billion reserve that Digital has set aside for layoffs and
plant closings. In fiscal 1992, Digital lost $2.79 billion.
Olsen contradicted statements from Digital that he handpicked Robert B.
Palmer, the vice president who officially ascends to president and chief
executive officer today. "I wasn't directly involved," Olsen said, adding that
"I don't have any negative thoughts" about the 51-year-old Palmer. Does he
have, then, positive thoughts? "Don't ask too many hard questions," Olsen said
 flatly.
To be sure, he did not express overwhelming confidence in Palmer, a
seven-year veteran of Digital, or the management team he is assembling. "It's
too early to say what they will do," Olsen said. Palmer will address a group
of reporters and analysts at 11:30 this morning.
Most analysts expect the 113,800-employee company to lay off around 15,000
workers. Olsen, who ran Digital for 35 years, maintained an informal
no-layoffs policy until 1991. "We never used the word layoffs," he said. "We
helped people find other jobs internally or externally."
With the insistence of the press on numbers all the time, it brutalizes the
whole process. It was always done gently, without the humiliation and
brutalness of reading it in the paper. But the world is different now."
Indeed Olsen said that he hoped Digital would not completely abandon his
style. "Sometimes the numbers have to be more large, and things can't be done
as slowly," he conceded. Sources close to the company have said that Olsen's
departure at least in part resulted from his unwillingness to lay off large
 numbers of employees.
If such a layoff is in the offing, Olsen certainly went to great pains
yesterday to make it clear that "I literally haven't been involved" in any
aspect of Digital over the last three months. He said that his lack of
involvement "just seemed like an obvious thing to do from everybody's point of
 view. It was never discussed."
He said that he has written hundreds of pages of advice - covering such
subjects as how to run meetings, picking employees and the "nature of our
business" - mostly to Palmer. He said that Palmer has welcomed his memos, and
encouraged him to send more. "I said that when I retired, I'd never be one of
those who interfered, but I've probably done my share of interfering," Olsen
 said.
But, he added, "I never had this feeling of ownership" about Digital., in
which he owns roughly two percent of stock. "I don't at all have these
emotional things I think you are looking for. I'm a professional manager."
One area about which Olsen clearly does feel emotional is the circumstances
of his departure. He said that it was "nobody's business" what goes on at
Digital board meetings, and claimed that "I don't know a lot of things." When
pushed further, Olsen raised his voice saying, "No, no, no, don't push. Don't
be a pain in the neck. I said we are not going to discuss it."
He added, "There are all kinds of implications, and they will all come out
 wrong in the Globe anyway."
Asked about reports that he had told a group of engineers that he was fired,
Olsen claimed that he did not remember saying it, but admitted that "senior
people said I did." He rather cyptically [sic? - TT] added that "you're
pushing too hard on words. There are different kinds of meanings."
As to whether he would still like to be running Digital, he said that "from
the start, I only asked to stay as long as I was very best."
Apparently, that exit instinct also also applies to his role as a board
member. In July Digital said that Olsen, who serves as DE FACTO [italics - TT]
chairman, would serve out his term, which ends in November 1993. But on Sept.
14 Digital announced that Olsen would step down as of today.
Had he stayed, he said, "I would do it poorly. I know too much. The board is
supposed to look at things at a distance and with objectivity. I know all the
questions to ask. It's not good. I'm a nice member of other boards."
Aside from serving on other boards, and giving speeches, Olsen did not
elaborate on his future plans. Although he described himself as more of an
engineer than an entrepreneur, he would not rule out starting another
business. "I'm young, and who knows what happens in the future," he said.
As for the immediate future - today - Olsen said that he would not appear at
Palmer's corporate coming-out party. "It will be like any other day," said
Olsen, who started Digital when he was 31 years old. "I've got a list of
things to do, a list of calls to make, and a bunch of letters I'd better
 answer."
With that, Olsen - who was happy to have gotten his fax machine repaired -
rose and lumbered back into the house that that will now serve as his office.
But he did allow himself one moment of sentimentality. Sort of.
"I don't miss the hoopla. I'll miss tilting at reporters," he said, focusing
his eyes on the one who happened to be present. "I'll miss them asking their
dumb questions, and trying to straighten them out."

Digital - Hudson semiconductor manufacturing facility registered to
	international quality standards
	{Livewire, Worldwide News, 25-Sep-92}
Digital has announced that its Hudson, Mass. semiconductor manufacturing
facility has been registered by the Quality Management Institute (QMI) to
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9002.
Hudson is one of two Digital sites manufacturing the recently announced
 Alpha AXP family of semiconductors.
The ISO 9000 series of international quality assurance standards is becoming
a prerequisite for conducting business in Europe and other parts of the world.
Registration of a quality program requires adherence to strict guidelines and
comprehensive auditing by a qualified external agency such as QMI. With
Hudson's registration, all four of Digital's semiconductor facilities
worldwide are now registered to ISO 9002. As of Quality System Update's last
publication (Summer, 1992), fewer than 400 quality systems in all industries
 are registered in the U.S.
In a ceremony at the Hudson facility, a QMI representative presented Digital
with a plaque signifying the Hudson site's accomplishment.
Ed Caldwell, vice president, Semiconductor Operations, remarked, "We are
pleased with this recognition of our ongoing commitment to quality. With the
European Economic Community's adoption of ISO 9000 standards, this
certification becomes much more significant in the global marketplace."

Sun covertly backed suit against rival group
   			By Lee Gomes

Sun Microsystems inc. has been secretly backing a tiny software
firm's lawsuit against a group of Sun's industry rivals, an arrangement
that one legal expert said could be unethical.
Sun's help,. disclosed in court documents last week, was
acknowledged by Sun on Wednesday and was estimated to reach $7 million
in legal fees.
In a brief statement, after which a spokeswoman declined to answer
additional questions, Sun said it was aiding Addamax Corp., a small
Illinois software firm, in a lawsuit against the Open Software
Foundation, a non-profit consortium of Sun's major competitors in the
workstation industry.
The foundation is creating a version of the UNIX operating system.
Sun is endorsing a competing effort, leading to one of the fiercest
wars in the computing industry in recent years.
Addamax filed an antitrust lawsuit in April 1991 to contest the
foundation's decision to use one of Addamax's competitors as a
subcontractor. The suit, filed in Massachusetts, listed Addamax as the
sole plaintiff and named Hewlett-Packard Co. and Digital Equipment
Corp. as added defendants.
Industry observers said Sun might not want to be publicly
associated with the lawsuit for public relation reasons: It wouldn't
want to be seen as using the court system - rather than the marketplace
- - - to go after a competitor, especially one that stands for "open systems."
Open systems is non-proprietary software that allows computers
from various manufacturers to work together.
Addamax admitted to the assistance from Sun only last week. It
refused to answer pre-trial questions from the foundation's lawyers
about outside help until forced to do so by the judge.
A foundation spokeswoman said Sun "has put $7 million" into the Addamax suit.
"We're not suggesting anything is illegal," she said. "We're just
surprised and disappointed to find out that this is one the realities of
the case, especially when Sun says it is a proponent of open systems."
In its brief statement, Sun said it was asked by Addamax to
provide a loan guarantee to help fund the lawsuit and "because Addamax
has been a vendor to the company and appears to be raising serious
issues of importance to the industry, we agreed to do so."
The Sun spokeswoman declined to answer questions about the case,
and it was not clear whether Sun had given money to Addamax or simply
guaranteed a loan to cover the legal bills.
Sun's actions were questionable,m said Barbara Babcock, a
professor at the Stanford Law School, who said they could spell trouble
for the company.
While simply providing a loan guarantee would be considered less
offensive than actually paying Addamax's legal bills, Sun's behavior
"raises some serious questions of ethics and deception that the court
will probably want to have answered," she said.
Especially disturbing, Babcock said, was that Addamax refused to
divulge Sun's help until being ordered to by the judge. "Whenever
someone reacts that way, you know they have something to hide," she said.
Babcock said a judge would have sereveral options in handling the
matter ranging from letting it pass to levying penalties against Sun,
Addamax or Addamax's lawyers.
