Seminar Speakers / DEXPO

As a seminar (different from symposium) speaker, I felt I should throw my
$0.02 worth in.

From my experience, DECUS US pays round-trip coach, 2 nights, reasonable
meals, and any duplication expenses (up to something like $23/attendee).
If a second seminar is offered by the same speaker, an additional night is
covered and related meals (and of course duplication expenses). There is
no *direct* compensation. Co-speakers also receive expenses, helpers (non-
speakers) do not.

I've spoken with DECUS Canada (I'm offering my seminars for their National
event in Montreal); they have a limit for all expenses for a seminar (room,
air, duplication), and a CN$1000 direct compensation to speakers. Neither
Co-speakers nor helpers receive any expense coverage.

DECUS Europe - I'm not sure of the details (I reviewed the material *months*
ago) but they provide some kind of expense reimbursement and allow the speaker
to attend the symposia for free.

I do not necessarily agree with the US policy, but I give my seminars anyway -
because I enjoy doing so. I *would like* to receive money for doing so, but
that is not my prime motivation.

I've spoken with the SIG representatives about the "other" seminars (TTI/DEXPO)
and there are political problems with being involved with both. There are some
hard and/or hurt feelings on both sides of this issue.

Personally, I plan on continuing to offer my seminars through DECUS (US,
Canada, *and* Europe) until I get burned-out or the organization screws me
personally.

BTW: "Advanced C Programming" - Fall 91, Spring 92, offered/cancelled -
                                 El Paso 10/92, offered - Fall 92,
                                 proposed - Canada 3/93.
"Everything you wanted to know about IBM Mainframe computers"
{no flames please - many of us work in
                                  multiple platform environments} -
                                 Spring 92, offered - Fall 92, proposed -
                                 Canada 3/93.
"Successful Job Search for the Technical Professional." -
                                 proposed/declined - Spring 92, Fall 92
(3P SIG interested for the future),
                                 proposed - Canada 3/93.
    These are my seminars.
