MUMPS is botha a database and a language > > The language is an extended BASIC, as I recall. No way! MUMPS has nothing in common with basic. The command structure is different, the philosophy is different, and the way it operates is different. It does have an "immediate" mode where some commands are executed when typed, but so does APL for that matter. If you want to claim that MUMPS is an extended Basic, you might as well claim that BASIC is an extended ALGOL, since it gets the FOR statement for looping, which started with ALGOL. That's an old joke in a way; the constructs a language use show its roots. Languages using DO for looping come from FORTRAN. Languages that use FOR for looping trace back to ALGOL. Languages that use paragraphs trace back to the old "toxic waste" of COBOL.
