DECUS AUSTRALIA 1994 SYMPOSIUM
NATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE
CANBERRA
SATURDAY 20 TO THURSDAY 25 AUGUST 1994
=== CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ===
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On behalf of the Symposium Planning Committee, I would like to take
this opportunity to invite you to participate, as distinct from just
attend, the 1994 DECUS Symposium, to be held at the National
Convention Centre, Canberra from Saturday, 20th to Thursday, 25th
August 1994, with DECUS Educational Seminars scheduled on the
Saturday and on the Sunday.
A DECUS Symposium is different things to different people. To
some, it is a forum for the exchange of ideas. To others an
opportunity to find solutions to specific problems, to most it is a
time to receive instruction on a host of topics relating to Digital
equipment. To all it is a chance to attend the largest computing
conference and associated trade show that focuses on the Digital
Equipment marketplace in the Southern hemisphere.
Whatever your reasons for attending the Symposium, please bear in
mind that nothing will happen without the participation of those
who actually present papers at the Symposium.
This message outlines a number of ways in which you can participate
and I urge you to consider what contribution you can make to
a successful Symposium in 1994. Remember, something which may
seem routine to you may be of immense interest to others and
could easily be the topic for a presentation. Consider also
the professional development opportunities and exposure in having
you or your staff research and present a paper to your peer group.
Please take a few moments to read this brochure and to consider its
contents. Without participation from the members, there would be
no DECUS Symposium, so please, if you are able to contribute in any
way, make the decision now and begin working on your submission.
All we want at this stage is an abstract of your presentation.
Please also remember that there is a prize - an all expenses paid
trip to an overseas DECUS Symposium - for the best formal paper;
details of how you could win this prize are in this brochure.
I look forward to receiving your submission. With your
participation we can make the 1994 DECUS Australia Symposium the
best yet!
Symposium Planning
The Symposium Program
DECUS (Digital Equipment Computer Users Society) will design a
comprehensive program for its 1994 Symposium, based on individual
sessions. These sessions will be streamed by their areas of interest
to help the Symposium attendee stay abreast of developments in the
highly technical and ever-changing Digital Equipment Corporation
marketplace.
In conjunction with the Symposium, DECUS will also offer intensive one
day and two day Seminars on a wide variety of topics. Seminars offer
delegates the opportunity to further their knowledge on a more
detailed level than is possible during individual sessions.
Seminars will be run on Saturday, 20th August 1994 and Sunday, 21st
August 1994. The Symposium will run from Monday 22nd August 1993 to
Thursday 25th August 1993 in up to ten streams.
Objectives
The program aims to impart knowledge on the products, services and
technologies of Digital Equipment Corporation and Digital related
vendors. It caters for attendees from novice users to advanced
programmers, system managers and IT professionals.
The program will help individuals to:
o Acquire detailed knowledge of the latest products in the Digital
marketplace.
o Share experiences with other users who have overcome similar
problems with the hardware and software.
o Make contacts with people in the same line of business.
o Visit the unified exhibition which will showcase the products and
services available in the Digital marketplace.
Training Strategy
The Symposium is the most interactive medium for information exchange
provided by DECUS. It consists of formal presentations, tutorials,
panels and question and answer sessions. All of these sessions are shown
on the Timetable provided to each delegate.
Some presentations will be given by Digital's developers from Central
Engineering and by local specialists trained in the latest Digital
products. There will also be presentations on Digital-related and third
party solutions. Symposium attendees will take away invaluable information
that can be implemented in their work place.
Training Guarantee Levy Applicability
The Symposium and Seminars may be eligible training under the Training
Guarantee Levy, and are designed for utilisation by your organisation
as such if your objectives to develop, maintain or improve
employment-related skills, competencies and knowledge are met by the
elements of these programs.
Submission Information
Presentations may come in many different formats, from formal papers
to panel discussions, from poster papers to question and answer
sessions. All play an important part in the make-up of a Symposium
and all are invited. Feel free to select the format which best suits
you and your topic. This article contains an application form for
you to describe your submission and to submit an abstract and a speaker
biography. Please fill out the form and mail, email or FAX it to the DECUS
Office PRIOR TO THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE OF 2ND MARCH, 1994.
In early June intending authors will be sent information to assist in
preparing their written papers for ultimate publication in the
conference Proceedings. At this time speakers will also be informed
of the proposed date and time for their paper(s) on the DRAFT
timetable. If you have a strong preference for date and time, please
inform the DECUS office when you submit your abstract.
Closing Date
The closing date for receipt of submissions is 2nd March, 1994. Forms
mush reach the DECUS office in Sydney by that date to be included in
scheduling and publication in the Symposium Registration Kit.
Be assured of a premium time slot for your presentation by getting your
papers in by the March 2nd deadline!
Late Submissions
Submissions may be accepted after the March 2nd deadline, but they may
not be scheduled to best advantage or at all.
The timetable will be FROZEN on the 8th July, 1994. Speakers will
then be informed of the FINAL date and time for their paper(s) from
the FROZEN timetable. This close-off date enables publication of the
Symposium Guide. This Guide is distributed to all attendees to enable
them to plan their session attendance. ACCEPTANCE CANNOT BE
GUARANTEED AFTER THIS DATE AND IS SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF SPACE IN
THE TIMETABLE.
Abstract Guidelines
The presentation title and an abstract of the presentation are
required for inclusion in the timetable and the Symposium Guide. The
title should be concise but informative and preferably less than eight
words. The abstract should be between 150 and 200 words, with a
minimum of jargon and with acronyms defined. Please write in the
present tense, i.e. "This session describes..." The abstracts editor
may edit the abstract to reduce the length or to conform to style.
Papers are scheduled into blocks of between an hour and a half and two
hours, and the organisers try to place papers on similar topics into
each block. Please assess the target audience carefully when
completing your application, as an accurate rating will result in a
better timetable.
Best Paper Prize
Win an all expenses paid trip to an overseas Symposium! The DECUS
Board presents this prize for the best formal paper given. It will
cover airfare, accommodation and registration for one presenter to
attend a nominated DECUS Symposium overseas. A panel of judges will
select the winning paper from those received in written form at the
DECUS office by 5th August, 1994.
Selection will be based on technical content, user interest and
speaker presentation. The winner will be announced at the end of the
Symposium.
DECUS Educational Seminars
In conjunction with the Symposium, DECUS presents full one day and two
day seminars providing professional training to attendees.
Submissions for potential seminars are invited from appropriately
qualified presenters. It is usual for presenters' costs to be covered
for Seminar activities. Seminars will be held on Saturday 20th and
Sunday 21st August 1994.
Commercialism Guidelines
Generally, an activity is NOT acceptable if:
a) its primary purpose is to promote sales;
b) it relates to a product which does not interact with a
Digital product;
c) it involves an employment announcement or solicitation.
The guiding principle is that presentations must not embarrass or
annoy attendees, nor compromise their employers.
All presentations must be given by registered attendees to the
Symposium; attendees must be members of DECUS. Non-members may obtain
membership application forms from the DECUS office. Individual
membership of DECUS is free.
Plan to Register
If you have to budget for conference attendance, ensure now that
provision is made for DECUS in your 94/95 Fiscal Year. As an
indication, initial estimates are for a registration fee for the
Symposium of around A$795 (A$640 for early registrants),
One Day Seminars of around A$295 and Two Day Seminars of around A$475.
In addition, you will need to budget for fares and accomodation of
a suitable standard.
Later in the year, a Registration Package containing session details,
travel and accommodation information and the registration application,
will be available. It will be sent to all members. To assist attendees,
DECUS has reserved accommodation at various hotels in Canberra.
