Next ESILUG Meeting
===================
Tuesday, March 26th
Topics: TCP/IP Directions, FX!32
The March meeting features a presentation on TCP/IP directions by
TGV, and on the FX!32 binary translator by Digital.
Agenda
1:00 Welcome & Introductions
1:10 Questions & Answers
1:30 FX!32 Overview, Ed Herold, Digital Equipment
For those running Windows NT on the Digital Alpha platform,
all code which is compiled only for the Intel platform will
now be able to execute on Alpha using Digital's FX!32 binary
translation & emulation technology.
2:00 TCP/IP Directions, Tim Sylvester, TGV
Tim's presentation covers new developments in TCP/IP
networking such as IP addressing (CIDR), IPv6, and security
enhancements; a technical update on new server technologies
recently announced by TGV, including Web Clusters that address
problem areas of reliability and scalability of the World Wide
Web; and status of the announced acquisition of TGV by Cisco.
The Q&A session will focus on these two questions: Where is your
organization headed with OpenVMS and Windows NT? How will you make
your transitions? Find out whether others are facing the same issues
you're facing, and get some ideas on how to handle them! We'll still
have room for normal Q&A, of course. Ask your technical questions,
check up on rumors, announce positions available or desired, or just
find out what your peers are up to. Members of other user groups are
welcome to announce upcoming events.
The meeting will be held at CNA Corporation in Alexandria, Virginia
(see directions at the end of this document). The LUG thanks CNA for
hosting this meeting!
(Please note that the Winter edition of the DECUS magazine contained the
incorrect date for this meeting. The correct date is March 26.)
The February Meeting
====================
On February 12, the ESILUG met at Microsoft's Washington, DC
facility. Approximately 70 people attended. This marked our first
meeting under our new name, the Enterprise Server Integration Local
Users Group.
John Smith, Digital OpenVMS Corporate Marketing, presented an overview
of the OpenVMS and Windows NT Affinity Program. The goal of this
program is to enable OpenVMS users to easily add Windows NT servers to
their environment, and to enable Windows NT users to add OpenVMS
back-end servers. Microsoft supports the Affinity program as part of
the Microsoft/Digital Alliance for Enterprise Computing. During
lunch, Ed Herold, ESILUG's Digital Counterpart, demonstrated Affinity
in action on systems loaned to us for the meeting. Joyce Etheridge,
Microsoft Architectural Engineer, described upcoming Windows NT
releases. Ed Herold talked about Digital's Windows NT cluster product.
Kevin Blackwell, Bristol Technology, gave a presentation on the Wind/U
Architecture. Wind/U is a portability toolkit that implements the
Microsoft Windows API under Motif on both Unix and OpenVMS. Karen
Noel, Digital OpenVMS Engineering, discussed OpenVMS V7.0 64-bit
support, kernel threads, and the new Spiralog file system.
Sherrian Finneran, U.S. Navy, received a plaque in recognition of her
six years as LUG Chair. Congratulations, Sherrian!
The February 12 meeting was a big event. Our thanks go to Microsoft
for providing the facility, to the speakers for taking the time to
share their information with us, and to Ed Herold and Bill Ryan of
Digital, who did lots of legwork in making the event possible.
Additional information about the Affinity program, Wind/U and Windows
NT can be found on the World Wide Web at the following URLs:

Letter from Sherrian Finneran
-----------------------------
Thank you for the plaque. I really do appreciate it. I would also
like to thank the members of the Capital Area VMS Local Users Groups
for allowing me to be the chair of the LUG for six years. Being Chair
allowed me to have experiences beyond my normal job as a Computer
Scientist and at the same time enhance my comprehension of computer
equipment. Most of all I enjoyed sharing with and learning from my
peers. I plan to continue to pursue this aspect for some time to
come. Thank you, again, for the plaque. Hope to see you at the next
LUG meeting.

The ESILUG-LIST Mailing List
============================
Would you like to receive the LUG newsletter electronically? The
ESILUG has an e-mail distribution list, ESILUG-LIST, for exactly that
purpose. If you received this newsletter via e- mail, you are already
subscribed. If not, you can subscribe to the mailing list by sending
the message subscribe esilug-list (without a subject) to
mailserv@decus.org.
We don't make the list of subscribers available to others. We use the
list for LUG business only. The recent mailing you may have seen on
ESILUG-LIST from a California recruiter appeared because we hadn't
initially restricted who could post to the list. The list is now
restricted, so you'll only see materials sent by the ESILUG Steering
Committee.
