speaker recognition

Hello everyone.

I was wondering if all the hundreds of speakers that come to DECUS
to present their ideas, get some type of recognition. (eg. a "thank-you"
letter, a certificate of participation, etc.)

For the first time, I gave two sessions last week and now I am back
to work and noone believes me... :-)

They all think I spent all my time playing slot machines...

Thanks. Please answer to:	themos@umbc5.umbc.edu

You get a nice green ribbon. Depending on your SIG, you may get more
or less recognition. I got a nice pen with a hi-lighter on one side and a
ballpoint on the other that says "Digital." Of course, I only gave 3
sessions. But I also got several very sincere "thank yous," a few email
messages from audience members, and got to make some very good contacts.

So, no recognition, really, but quite rewarding, personally and
professionally.

The 4GL SIG places a note in the Session Chair packet given to
each Session Chair. The note requests information for a "thank
you" letter to be sent to your boss or any person you designate.

We have given out volunteer gifts at past Symposia but now with
the reduced budget gifts are hard to come by.

         Which sessions did you chair?

If you tell me which sessions I can attempt to have the SIG Chair
write a letter to your boss.

Themos,

Contact someone in the SIG(s) on whose behalf you spoke. The SIG Chair
will be more than happy to supply you a letter on DECUS letterhead
thanking you for your participation. The letter can even be sent
directly to your boss underscoring how valuable and important your
contribution to DECUS as a speaker was.

I don't know which sessions you gave, but I know my SIG (Security)
routinely gives such recognition, but unless you're a Seminar
presenter, you have to ask for the letter.

Please accept my thanks and congratulations for helping to make
the Fall 1992 symposium a resounding success!

Best Regards,

Ron Tencati

Maybe this could be changed so all symposium presenters get a letter of thanks
as SOP. This would result in a single letter, rather than several for speakers
who give talks for several SIGS. cc the boss on request.

SOME do it now. I speak at DECUS to the exclusion of my sanity. As a
very frequent speaker, I get lots of these "thanks" letters. For instance,
Debbie Newkirk (EDUSIG Symposia Rep for the U.S. Chapter) ALWAYS sends a
personal note on DECUS stationary (even though she knows that I have no
boss to impress - I'm an independent). This is because Debbie is a
consumate professional in what she does (I know, since I have worked for
her in "real life").

On the international front, I even get GREETING CARDS from some Chapters -
plus, of course - personal notes of thanks from everyone from the Chapter
administrator on down to the SIG chairs. An amazing difference between
this and what I experience in the U.S. Chapter of DECUS. Yes, jeeves -
there are other DECUS chapters besides the U.S. one.
