Next Meeting: Tuesday, May 21st, 1:00pm
=======================================

ESILUG's next meeting is May 21 from 1:00-4:00pm at Digital Equipment
Corporation in Greenbelt, Maryland (see directions below).

Agenda

1:00 Introductions and Q&A

The Q&A session gives you the chance to ask your peers technical
questions and to learn whether they have encountered the same
problems. All questions are welcome. We also like to have a
theme that gives everyone an opportunity to comment. The Q&A
theme for this meeting is Web access. How do you gain access to
external Web sites? Have you set up your own Web server? Do you
have an intranet? What Web development tools do you like or
dislike? What are your organization's policies regarding Web
usage? Even if you don't have any Web connectivity yet, come
hear what others have to say.

1:30 Digital Clusters for Windows NT

Steve Davis, Digital Equipment Corporation, provides an up-close
look at Digital Clusters for Windows NT, including hardware
configuration guidelines and discussion of V1.0 "failover"
      operations

2:30 Windows NT for OpenVMS System Managers

Jim Becker, System Solutions Incorporated, presents the session
he'll be delivering at the June DECUS symposium in
St. Louis. This session translates the concepts, terms, and
tools familiar to VMS system managers into their equivalents in
the Windows NT arena. It's a "what's what" session, not a "how
      to" session.

This meeting provides information about Digital Clusters, a new
Windows NT enterprise computing technology, and gives OpenVMS system
managers a head-start on Windows NT features. If Windows NT is in
your future (or in your shop right now), you won't want to miss it!

The LUG thanks Digital Equipment Corporation for hosting this meeting.

The March Meeting: FX!32, TCP/IP Directions, TGV Multinet
=========================================================

The March meeting was held March 26 at the CNA Corporation in Alexan-
dria. The LUG thanks CNA for hosting the meeting and for providing
refreshments!

Q&A

The Q&A session was a good one. There were plenty of questions, answers,
experiences, and insights. Some highlights follow.

Q: Sometimes my logout freezes when logging out of an NT 3.51 Server
   system.
A: That's fixed in one of the NT Service Packs, which are available on
   Microsoft's Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/).

Q: What are some sites for searching the Web?
A: Alta Vista is a good one at http://www.altavista.digital.com/.
Netscape lists several search tools at http://home.netscape.com/home/
   internet-search.html.

Q: Has anyone had problems upgrading from VMS 6.1 to 6.2?
A: If you use Polycenter Install and choose not to install something,
the item is deleted from the system.

Q: How similar are NT and VMS?
A: NT has a Windows face and a VMS heart. It was designed by Dave
Cutler, one of the VMS designers. NT and VMS are philosophically very
similar, but very different in the details. You can find C2 security
in both. There is no VMS-style UIC protection code.

Q: Do I need NETBEUI or WINS on NT?
A: No. For example, you can do all your networking using TCP/IP or
IPX/SPX, and you can use DNS instead of WINS. You can run NetBIOS
   over TCP/IP.

FX!32 Overview

Ed Herold, Digital Equipment Corporation, gave a presentation on FX!32,
Digital's translation and emulation software that allows you to run
Intel-based Win32 applications on an Alpha running Windows NT. FX!32
will be available free of charge in mid-1996. A beta copy of FX!32 is
available for downloading from Digital at http://www.service.digital.
com/fx32. A technical description can be found at http://www.digital.
com/.I/info/semiconductor/amt/fx32/index.html.

Software (SoftPC and SoftWindows) is available from Insignia Solutions
for running either Win16 standard mode applications or DOS
character-cell applications on an Alpha running NT. Software for running
Win16 enhanced mode applications will be available from Insignia
Solutions in mid-1996.

Of course, if the software has already been ported to the Alpha, you
don't need FX!32 or SoftWindows!

TCP/IP Directions & TGV Announcements

Tim Sylvester, TGV, discussed current problems with the TCP/IP protocol
(authentication, data encryption, configuration, bandwidth reservation,
and address space depletion) and TCP/IP futures (IP security, DNS/DHCP
integration, RSVP, and IPv6). The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force,
http://www.ietf.org) is working on these problems. RFC 1825 discusses a
security architecture for IP, including packet authentication and
encryption. IETF working groups are investigating the integration of DNS
and DHCP (dynamic DNS updates, DHCP server to server communication,
etc.). RSVP is the Resource Reservation Protocol which would accommodate
multimedia applications, for example. IPv6 offers 128-bit addresses,
autoconfiguration, bandwidth reservation, and built-in security;
prototypes will be available by the end of 1996.

Tim also gave us an update on TGV's status now that they've been
purchased by Cisco. He described a top-to-bottom solution from a single
vendor, in which TGV products provide client access, information
services, and TCP/IP services, and in which Cisco products deliver the
network infrastructure. TGV anticipates a busy spring with "tons of new
products."

Tim described the Cheetah Web Server and other recent TGV products.

TGV generously provided evaluation copies of the Cheetah Web Server for
attendees. A single licensed copy was also given away as a door prize at
the end of the meeting. Thank you, TGV!

From the Chair
==============

If "ESILUG" is pronounced "easy lug," then that makes me the ESI Chair,
right? In fact, I'm sitting in an easy chair as I write this, so there
you go. Go find your own easy chair, sip a refreshing drink, and
leisurely read through the ESILUG newsletter. You'll feel better.

What makes us the "easy lug?" Attending a meeting is easy; just show
up. Becoming a member is easy (and free); subscribe to our electronic
mailing list or get on our paper mailing list. Your job will be easy
(well, easier, at least) because of the practical info you give and get
at the meetings.

I'll see you at the next meeting, ya big LUG. (Just don't sit on the ESI
Chair.)

Upcoming Events
===============

The DECUS '96/St. Louis national event is June 1-6, 1996. The seminars,
symposium sessions, and trade show activities planned for this event can
provide answers to the questions you deal with on a daily basis: How can
I connect existing legacy mainframe systems and minicomputers with new
application servers, myriad desktop systems and mobile laptops? How do I
manage an increasingly broad and expanding network? How do I implement
Microsoft Windows NT into my existing Digital environment? How can I get
my business up and running securely on the Internet? The DECUS
'96/St. Louis early-bird registration deadline is May 17; registration
forms will be available at the May 21 ESILUG meeting if you still need
one. More information on DECUS can be found on the DECUS Web page at
http://www.decus.org. If you would like to receive DECUS program
updates via e-mail, send the message subscribe decus-info-list to
mailserv@ decus.org.

The Advanced Systems User Group (ASUG) holds meetings each month on
Windows NT, Microsoft BackOffice, and 32-bit Windows development
support, usually at Microsoft's Washington DC facility. The May meetings
are as follows. Exchange: "Mailbox Agents, OLE Messaging, DAPI" (May
7), NT: "Network and Data Storage Management" (May 8), Internet
Developers: "Microsoft's Internet Platform Strategy" (May 13), VC++
"Sample Programs - C++ Nuts and Bolts" (May 16), SQL: "Tuning MS SQL
Server for the Data Warehouse" (May 20), SNA (May 22). For more
information, visit the ASUG Web page at http://www.cpcug.org/user/
ckelly/new_asug.html.

The Desktop Integration (DILUG) group met in early May; the topic was
PATHWORKS v6. DILUG meetings will resume in the fall.

OpenVMS Internet Product Suite
