11:30-12:15 C/S Successs Story (Patty Petry)
This is a presentation and brief demonstration of a Mobile
desktop application for patient admission / assessment.
Mobile, pen-based laptops, running a GUI interacted with
an existing patient database. The presentation will
overview the business problem, the architecture of the
solution, its implementation, lessons learned, and
concludes with a brief demonstration of the GUI.
12:15-12:45 Lunch/Break
12:45-13:45 C/S Success Story (Dave Kasakitis)
This is a presentation of a C/S pilot to move an existing
VAX/VMS based application to 3 a tier, standards based,
C/S solution. The core middleware was OSF's Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE). The pilot had to demonstrate
access to legacy (VMS) data and concurrent access to a new
RDBMS. The pilot also had to demonstrate source code
portability from VAX/VMS to Alpha/Digital UNIX. I.e., a
smooth migration from VMS to Digital UNIX was possible.
Also key issue was creating both a PC/GUI based client
front end, along with a compatible VT terminal front end
that would use the same server software. The following
are overviewed: business problem, overall solution, DCE,
and lessons learned.
13:45 - 14:00 Wrap-up/close

presentations available at the meeting. John has also made
his presentation available on his web page at
