 Yes, most versions of sendmail will choke on the numeric addresses.

 'ieeefs.ieee.org' has *only* UUCP links at the present time.  Note that
 both the MX records (via your 'nslookup') and the map for 'ieeefs' show
 that it connects *only* to pilot.njin.net at the present time.  This
 will, however, change when the 56k link to the Internet is installed here
 in the Piscataway Service Center in a few months.
