Background
----------
The inaugural workshop was held in Torino, Italy, in July 1985, and
since then has become a biennial event, with the second and third
workshops held in Madison, USA, in 1987, and Kyoto, Japan, in 1989.
The workshop provides a forum for the presentation of original
contributions in the area of Petri net based models and tools for
performance evaluation and systems design. A one day tutorial, and tool
exhibition have now become part of the workshop. Typically, about a 100
people participate, coming from industry, research institutions and
universities.

---------------
The Tutorial, Workshop and Tools Exhibition will be held at:
Telecom Australia Research Laboratories
770 Blackburn Road
Clayton North, Victoria, 3168
Australia
Email: pnpm91@trl.oz.au
Telefax: +61 3 253 6144
Telephone: +61 3 253 6401
Letters, telefaxes and email messages should be clearly marked with
the name of the intended recipient. This is particularly important
for email as a single account will be used. It will also be possible
to send email messages from the conference site.
The Tutorial and Workshop will take place in the Auditorium of
Building M8, and the tools exhibition in the M8 Foyer. There is
a cafeteria in this building which is open from 8.00 to 15.00.
Clayton is a dormitory suburb of Melbourne. It has a lot of light
industry and some major educational facilities such as Monash
University and the Rusden Campus of the Victoria College. It is located
20km (12 miles), to the south east of the city centre. Melbourne is
Australia's second largest city, with a population of over 3 million
people from a great diversity of European and Asian backgrounds. It was
established at the mouth of the Yarra River, near the shores of Port
Phillip Bay, in 1834. Melbourne is known as the `Garden City' of
Australia, because of its parks and gardens. There are also many
different cultural activities (concerts, theatre, film, art), and a
great variety of restaurants and entertainment facilities.
Climate and Weather
-------------------
Australia spans two major climatic zones. In the north, a third of the
continent is in the tropics. The remaining two thirds are in the
temperate zone. Melbourne is the southern-most mainland capital, at a
latitude of 38 degrees south. Melbourne's weather is very variable and
not easily predicted. The average daily maximum temperature in
Melbourne in December is 24C. The variation in temperatures is
considerable, ranging from 18C to 38C plus. It is possible for the
temperature to be 38C one day and 20C the next. Hail and heavy rain are
also possible, but infrequent.
Time Zone
----------
There are 3 time zones in Australia. Melbourne and all the eastern part
of the continent are on eastern summer time in December (GMT+11 hours).
Domestic Air Travel
-------------------
Due to deregulation of the airlines in Australia, it is possible to get
rather cheap flights to other Australian capital cities (and Cairns).
Currently (till 31 October 91) Compass Airlines are offering the following
return airfares from Melbourne: Cairns $464, Perth $320, Brisbane $300, Sydney
$190, Adelaide $140. All $ are Australian Dollars (AUD).
Registration

Approximately: 1AUD = .78USD = 1.3DM = 107Yen = .46GBP
Note that currency fluctuations occur daily.
Accommodation
-------------
Accommodation will be the responsibility of participants. The following
is a list of hotels at various locations. The city hotels have been
chosen on the basis of value for money, and with the rates obtained are
at the low end of the market. If you wish to stay in a 5 star hotel
(250-300 AUD per night) then details of these can be obtained from Mr.
Phil Sweeney. The tariffs detailed below are for room only unless
otherwise stated.
Choosing a hotel in the city will give you easy access to the wide
range of activities the city offers. It will however mean travelling
the 20 km to and from the conference site each day. The hotels in
Clayton/Mt Waverley are within 20 minutes walking distance of the
conference site, or 5 minutes by taxi. Being a light industrial and
dormitory suburb, Clayton has very little to offer in the evenings.
Hotels in the City
--------------------
The tariffs quoted for these hotels are a special rate for the
conference. Participants are advised to book before the end of October
for these rates to apply. When booking, the conference name PNPM91
should be quoted.

Arrival Procedures
------------------
The registration desk will be located in the M8 Foyer. All participants
will require security passes to access building M8 of TRL.
For those attending the Tutorial, registration will be from 8.30 to
9.00 on Monday 2 December 1991.
For those attending the Workshop, registration will be from 8.30 - 9.00,
and then from 18.00 - 21.00 on Monday 2 December and from 8.00 - 9.00
on Tuesday 3 December 1991.
Workshop Office
---------------
The registration desk will operate as the Workshop Office and will be
open during Tutorial and Workshop hours. The telephone number of the
desk will be +61 3 253 6707.
Welcome Reception
-----------------
The conference sponsors will organise an informal welcoming event in
M8 on the evening of Monday 2 December 1991, from 18.00 to 20.00.
Accompanying persons will be very welcome at this reception.
Transport
----------
Overseas participants should take a direct flight to Melbourne
International airport. The airport is about 20 km north west of the
city centre. The easiest way to the city is by taxi at a cost of about
20 AUD and taking less than 30 minutes. There are also airport buses
that run regularly between the city centre and the airport. Most
domestic flights to Melbourne will also arrive at the International
airport.
For participants wishing to come directly to the conference site (TRL)
or nearby hotels, the easiest means of transport is again by taxi. This
will cost about 40AUD and take between 50 and 90 minutes depending on
traffic.
For those staying in the city, reaching TRL by public transport is a
challenge. The easiest way is to take a taxi at a cost of less than
25AUD. The journey will take about 30 to 40 minutes. For those who like
some adventure, the alternative is to take the Met. The Met allows you
to buy zonal and multiple zonal tickets that are valid on any Met
transport. This includes trams, buses and trains. From your hotel you
will probably need to take a tram to the nearest railway station. From
there, you will need to take a train to Clayton station on the
Dandenong Line, or to Syndal on the Glen Waverley line. From Clayton
station you can catch a 703 Ventura bus north bound, via Monash
University to Blackburn Road. The bus turns left into Blackburn Road
from Wellington Road. The first bus stop in Blackburn Road is directly
opposite TRL. From Syndal station, you need to walk back towards the
city along Coleman Parade to get to Blackburn Road. Cross over Coleman
Pde to the south and you will very soon find the bus stop. (Dont be
tempted to cross over Blackburn Road to the bus stop by the bridge -
that will take you in the opposite direction!) Catch the Ventura 703 or
Quinces 631 south bound along Blackburn Road to the last stop before
Wellington Road. This stop is directly outside TRL. You should allow
about an hour and a half for such a journey.
For those staying at the local hotels, a taxi is recommended (cost
should be less than 5 AUD) although walking is certainly possible. For
those at the Monash Halls of Residence, walking is recommended.
Banquet
--------
The banquet will be held at the Cuckoo restaurant in the Dandenong
Ranges about 45 minutes drive to the east of Melbourne. Buses will
depart from the conference site at 18.00 on Wednesday 4 December 1991
and will return to the Clayton and city hotels around 12 midnight. On
our way to the restaurant we plan to stop at Mt Dandenong for a
panoramic view over the Yarra Valley to Melbourne and Port Philip Bay.
Any special meal requirements should be indicated on the registration
form. Extra banquet tickets will be available for 45AUD.
Excursion
----------
We plan an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary on Friday 6 December at a
cost of 50 AUD. The sanctuary houses over 200 species of native
Australian birds, reptiles and mammals, including kangaroos, emus,
koalas, wombats, the platypus and lyrebird and much much more. There is
also a nocturnal enclosure which will allow you to see many of our more
exotic creatures that only venture out in the night. It is considered
to be one of the top places in Australia to observe our unique animals
at close hand.
Buses would pick-up passengers from city hotels around 9.30 and the
Clayton hotels around 10.15. We would then depart for Healesville,
about 1 hours drive. Lunch would be at Badger's creek reserve, where
a BBQ would be provided. The afternoon would be spent at the Sanctuary
and you would be delivered to your hotel around 17.00.
If you would like to go on this excursion, please book on the
registration form. The viability of the excursion will depend on
numbers, and money will be returned to participants who pay in advance
if the excursion is cancelled.
Tools Exhibition
----------------
Computer aided tools for the creation, manipulation and analysis of
Petri net based models will be demonstrated during the workshop
including the tutorial day. There will also be a special tools session
on Tuesday, starting at 17.15 in the M8 auditorium, to allow tool
demonstrators to present their exhibits to a larger audience.
