CALL-FOR-VOLUNTEERS for initiating activities of a new Task Force on YUFORIC IEEE Computer Society ______________________________________________ YUFORIC stands for "YoUth FORum In Computer science and engineering (Think euphoric)". It is a workshop designed especially for students and young professionals to come together and exchange their ideas for advancing future research activities in the field of computer science and engineering. The forum is organized regionally for the most part, and the topic is selected freely according to regional interests. The same topic need not be repeated for each forum held in the same location. At the same time, forum on the same topic can take place simultaneously in different countires of the world. The only requirement is that each forum should focus on a timely topic. YUFORIC was first held in Tokyo with the topic "next- generation user-interface technologies" in October 1994. The second YUFORIC was in Tokyo again in October 1995 with the topic "real-time computing systems". The third one is now being planned in conjunction with International Conference on Multimedia Computing and Systems (IEEE Multimedia Systems '96) in Hiroshima in June 1996 with the topic "multimedia computing". In celebration of the Computer Society's 50th anniversary, we've decided to initiate a new Task Force on YUFORIC in 1996 to provide a framework for maintaining and integrating regional activities worldwide, covering a variety of topics. YUFORIC welcomes presentation of studies in progress by university students and young professionals in industry and academia. Discussions are emphasized. Young professionals will be motivated to take the lead in guiding students' research interests. University students will have better insight into the on-going studies of the professional community. To make YUFORIC an even more attractive endeavor, a YUFORIC server will be provided at the Computer Society site for keeping selected manuscripts and discussion notes electronically, so that anyone who is interested can access the contents. When the system becomes widely used, it will establish a new standard for evaluation and qualification of students' work worldwide. People both in industry and academia, regardless of their ages and professions, will also benefit from this system by being able to acquire information of on-going studies in a variety of technological areas. We will develop specific activities, such as (i) analyzing regional needs and coordinating actual meeting plans based on regional needs, (ii) implementing and maintaining a YUFORIC server at the Computer Society site, (iii) promoting students' collaboration activities, (iv) organizing tutorials associated with or independent from discussion forums, (v) initiating also an annual YUFORIC meeting covering a variety of topics in computer science and engineering, and (vi) establishing industrial collaboration for supporting students' participation in the annual YUFORIC meetings. You are most welcome to join us. Please complete the form attached below and return it to me either by electronic mail or post mail at my address indicated below. Information about yourself that would be helpful in exploring mutual collaboration possibilities toward Task Force activity development would also be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
