Conferences

The Sun User Group sponsors one major conference each December in San
Jose, California. This Conference has a large vendor exhibit and
features a day of tutorials and several days of technical sessions.
The conferences are attended by members from around the world: the 1991
Conference was attended by nearly 4000 individuals from 21 countries,
and 32 of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. We also
provide tutorials and technical sessions at other exhibitions and
conferences around the world.

Past tutorials have included:.

	The Internet
	Advanced Systems Administration
	UNIX Device Drivers
	XView
	Basic X Concepts
	Writing Distributed Applications
	The Domain Name System
	Perl
	Mixed-OS Administration

The Sun User Group is dedicated to keeping in the forefront of Sun and
Sun-licensed technology. Our tutorials reflect the changing interests
and demands of our technical and professional community. Technical
proceedings, containing written versions of most of the papers presented
at the conferences, are available for the past three SUG conferences.

Some 1992 conferences in which you might be interested are:

Sun World Expo Conference and Exhibition, NEC, Birmingham, UK,
	September 22-24.

UNIX Expo, New York City, NY, September 22-24

Technetron '92, Boston, MA, November 9-11

EuSUG Conference, Wiesbaden, Germany, November 16-17.

	EurOpen, Amsterdam, Netherlands, November 25-29.

Sun User Group Tenth Annual Conference and Exhibition, San
	Jose, CA, December 7-10.

Local User Groups

One of the ways of getting to know your colleagues is through a local
user group. Local User Groups (LUGs) exist throughout the world.
Currently, there are LUGs in 25 states and 15 countries. The Sun User
Group supports these local groups with listings, literature, a mailing
list, and organizational assistance. Several international LUGs have
entered into formal arrangements with the Sun User Group to ensure that
their members receive README and other SUG benefits.

Periodicals

The Sun User Group publishes a quarterly newsletter, README, which
contains technical articles, User Group news, and Sun Microsystems and
third-party vendor information. Submissions are encouraged, and may
be sent to readme@sug.org. Past issues included articles concerning
superuser privileges, domain name servers, and networks.

Sun User Group members are also entitled to receive monthly a copy of
SunExpert magazine. SunExpert, published by Computer Publishing Group,
serves the UNIX workstation environment, emphasizing Sun, SPARC, and
Sun-compatible systems.

Member Discounts

Sun User Group members are entitled to a variety of textbook and
training discounts from publishers. Addison-Wesley gives 15% off
books and training; O'Reilly allows 10% off books; Prentice Hall
offers 15% off books, and Computing Systems, the USENIX juried
journal, is available to SUG members at 30% off the subscription
rate. SUG members also receive discounted registration at USENIX
and SUG conferences.

Dataram Corporation, a maker of memory modules, offers Sun User Group
members up to a 40% discount on a variety of their products. Qualix
Group offers a 15% discount on software purchases. Software Moguls
offer a 15% discount on SM-arch, their mainframe-like backup system.
We are negotiating with other publishers as well as with other
hardware and software vendors to offer further member discounts.

Software Library

The Sun User Group makes available public domain (unsupported, donated)
software. In the past, there have been software tapes; in 1991, keeping
in the technological forefront, SUG issued a CD-ROM. The 1991 SUG
CD-ROM contains 300MB of source code, fully-indexed archives of
Sun-related net postings, plug-and-play X11R4, compiled Sun 4 binaries
and nearly 200MB of Sun Micro- systems' software patches. There will be
other CD-ROMs released in February and June of 1992. The 1992.1 disk,
which was assembled by Robert A. Bruce, has 543MB of material,
including X11R5, 212MB of contributed X sources, GNU sources,
libraries, SPARC binaries, and an archive of comp.source.X postings.
The 1992.2 disk will have more SPARC binaries and other useful material
not found on previous disks. For further information, send email
to office@sug.org.
