Please excuse the intrusion. I usually don't subscribe to this group but need
some help. Hopefully someone might be able to help me out. I need to solve a
connectivity problem between a Sun-based network and an IBM mainframe.
Most of the solutions I come up with are solely on the Sun network. I'd like
to know if there's any kind of mainframe options I may have. Below is a "dump"
of the situation:
I've hit the first instance where Sun will no longer support a product we
are using under SunOS 4.1.3 - their Sunlink CG3270 SNA gateway. Our
existing configuration is an out of the box SunOS 4.1.3 U1 (X11R4/OpenWindows
3.2) on the servers and clients. Several servers have the MCP board
which connect to a 56K line to a COMTEN front-end to a mainframe (SNA traffic).
The customer has written tons of code on the mainframe expecting to use the
full screen mode - hence the need for the CG3270 (version 7.0FCS) & SNA
gateway (version 6.1). Everything works in our existing environment.

Well at least until a recent merger of two networks. With this merger we
need to run things somewhat differently. We need to run all the
applications of a series of servers which displays the output on the
user's workstation. The configuration of these new workstations are SunOS
4.1.3 with Bluestone's X11R5 and Motif 1.2. Having read the docs - this
appears it should work. I planned on running the CG3270 code on a
plain-jane Sun running 4.1.3_U1 and OpenWindows 3.2. The CG3270 command
line even specifies the -display option. In our configuration it works.
In the other organizations configuration it won't. Why not? Because the
CG3270 code requires NeWS - which is not in the MIT X11R5!!
Now I have a real problem. We have deployed a merged environment.
Unfortunately, access to the mainframe is a REAL requirement for my users and
those running X11R5 cannot get access.
Does anyone know of another package we may be able to use in place of
Sun's Sunlink CG3270 package? I really would like to keep the SNA
gateway & MCP software/hardware combination. It works and there's $$
involved and it's all under an existing support contract. I have
Brixton's TN3270 to test but the telnet version does not support full
screen (so I'm told).
I will be contacting our mainframe folks about telneting in and the options (if
any) that may support our needs. In the meantime, can someone give me some
options that may work from a mainframe perspective? We have token ring
connectivity to the mainframe via APPC/LU6.2. But all of the code I know is
custom made. I cannot add anything to the mainframe.
I'd appreciate any help.
