FidoNet Mail session via Internet: TelNet

I am trying to do a FidoNet MAIL session from one site over telnet, 

The other site is running TBBS w/TIMS.  I am able to script FrontDoor
to TBBS/TIMS but unable to start a transfer.  I presume it don't like
certain charitors(sp) that the mail session is trying to start (grin)
 
Do I need to setup TELNET to ignore upper ascii, etc.  But still put it
the session throught..just ignoring the garbage itself.
