I had this problem for a long time, until I came up with this fix.
The problem seemed to come from having 'tsunami' as an alias for
localhost - this meant that talk would work just fine locally, but as
soon as I connected to the Net and tried to tak remotely, it would
give me the error message as it was still trying to use the loopback
interface (I'm not sure why this fails, but this is my guess).

Try removing dallas from /etc/hosts after 'localhost'.  That sound fix
your problem.  talk will stop working locally after you do that,
except when you are online... for most of us, I guess that's not
really a problem although I did come up with a roundabout fix ;)
and some other things (I think GNU fingerd) didn't like it either :-/
but, if other things stop working, shout and I'll tell you how I did
it (using the dummy interface - there's probably a better way).
