Linux v1.0 SMAIL problem
#43

I have installed Linux v1.0 Slackware release for 24hr SLIP access
into ClarkNet and SMTP for my Novell 3.11 LAN. Everything works
great except some mail that is sent out through SMTP causes a
uucp_neighbors error. I know there is a missing file called
/usr/lib/smail/routers that will correct this with the right config
in it. The error is :

Xdefer: <address> reason: <ERR_127> router uucp_neighbors :
command '/usr/bin/uuname' returned exit status EX_32256

I know calling uuname is a bug in SMAIL and a routers file will fix
this but I don't know wht to put in it.

What do I need to put in /usr/lib/smail/routers to get these messages
delivered? Thanks for the help.

Calling uuname is not a bug, you just have a uucp router in your routers
file. Or is it that smail allways uses that router even if you comment it out
in the routers ? I don't remeber.

The easiest way out is to install uucp, then smail will call uuname to
find out that the mail is not going to one of your uucp_neighbours and
will try the next router.

Even a better solution is to disable all routers and use a smart_host instead.
In that way you avoid the problems with smail not looking up MX records.

Actually... I think the bug is from calling ferror() after the pipe
to uuname has been closed. Look in comp.os.linux.help (?) for a similar
discussion (search for smail or my name). Basically, you want to edit
smail*/src/routers/uuname.c and find where it closes the pipe to
uuname. Below that you will see a call to ferror(). Move the ferror()
code above the close code and everything starts working. (For me at least.)

Did you really want uucp_neighbors? How about removing the offending
router?

What is the latest version os smail and where can I ftp it from ?

I have 3.1.28.1 #5, Nov 93 and it is broken. It inserts extraneous
linefeeds and tabs making the spool file looking like follows:

While Linux's pine (3.89) can read it just fine, other email readers are
confused like hell.

Thanks, Caesar.

You would be better off with sendmail v8.

An even better solution still os go and get sendmail 8.6.
Why have everything forward off through a smart host when it can get
to its destination directly anyway? (OK, I know smail can be
configured... but it's a pain to get it to send out un-munged headers
and such anyway...)

... why get someone else to be smart for you when you can be smart
yourself? :-)

Phil (postmaster of such a smart-host who keeps getting bouncemail from
the Linux boxes using it as a smart-host because users get things wrong! :)

Well I got smail with MX support going pretty easily, but I have the uucp
functionality turned off (mainly because I don't use uucp at all and I don't
want all the headers munged). I had some problems in the beginning but
after that it worked like a charm.

Any anyone direct me to sendmail 8.6 ?

Thanks.

I hit this, it's actually a trivial fix. The config file that specifies
this stuff (I forget which SMAIL file it is, but you can probably find it,
I did :-) has code like this:

  "Received: " \
  "by $blah " \

etc. The problem is that the \ is suppose to be quoting and removing the
newline. But for reasons unknown, there is a space in the file after the
\ and before the newline character, so the \ quote the space instead and
the newline is inserted into the data. Deleting the space after the \
fixes the problem.
   Peter.

Herbert,

Can you post or send your config, routers, forward, transports, directors
files for us the un-initiated ? Hmm, better just send it to me directly.

I got smtp working with smart-host, but direct smtp with MX records still
eludes me.

Thanks, Caesar.

the smail that came with slackware 2.0 had to be recompiled here to get it
to look up MX records. Works great now.
