I've just recently upgraded my Alpha-XLT RH4.2 system to RH5.0, with a few
problems. Cross post is because I'm not entirely sure if it's an Alpha
specific problem.

Trying to establish a PPP connection, ppp0 link is established, PAP auth
succeeds, then messages file tells me SIOCADDRT: Operation not permitted.

This even happens running pppd as root. Reformat, and re-install RH4.0,
PPP works out of the box with my chat scripts. Upgrade to glib2, and it
didn't work again.

So I'm currently running vanilla RH4, hanging to upgrade to glibc2 :-/

Have a look at the update page on RedHat's homepage: there is a newer version for pppd that works. Me too, I have had the same problems under RH 5.0! But with the update it works fine.
