It's Time to Implement Soft Tempest for Personal Privacy: A Call to Arms
Right NOW government agencies are monitoring your communications
indescriminately. Not only through your connection to the Internet using their
worldwide spook-run ECHELON system (see
http://www.freecongress.org/ctp/echelon.html) but potentially through the
electro-magnetic signals sent out from your computer's screen, processor and
cabling.
This monitoring of your PC's van Eck radiation is known as TEMPEST
eavesdropping. (By the way LCD screens on laptops in general actually give out
a better signal for eavesdropping than the cathode ray tubes in standard
monitors. So called 'low emission' monitors are no better).
We have PGP (http://www.pgpi.com) and Fortify (http://www.fortify.net) to
protect against ECHELON. We need end-user implementations of a new technology
known as Soft Tempest to prevent TEMPEST monitoring.
Recently designed Soft Tempest fonts protect against government eavesdropping
of what you are typing, and it may be possible to create a Soft Tempest
'screen saver' which will send out a complete false screen image to those
trying to monitor what you are doing.
It has been over a year since the groundbreaking research was done by Markus
Kuhn and Ross Anderson. It's time for those concerned with personal privacy
and liberty to implement Soft Tempest for the popular operating systems.
PGP, Inc have a limited implementation of Soft Tempest fonts to protect
password entry in PGP 6.02 (now available in an International version from
http://www.pgpi.com) but a multi-platform, OS-level implementation of Soft
Tempest is what is required.
If you have the time and skills to spare on this important project for
personal privacy please email me. Prototype tools are available. Let's get
some Linux/xnix and MacOS X Server implementations out there. OS/2, Be,
Windoz and other legacy platforms will undoubtedly follow.
(The results of this project are intended for individual use and distribution
under the GNU General Public License.)
Don't let the spooks continue to invade your privacy. Act today or be _unable_
to act tomorrow.
