FWIW, I just spent a month researching just this question. I am a
Security Analyst/Systems Engineer, and Linux is an important part
of our Corporate network. As such, I needed a powerful laptop that
supported Linux, including X-Windows. The decision came down to
Either the Toshiba Tecra or WedgeTech ShowBook. The latter is a small
company that has been in business for a while and has gotten some good
reviews in spite of the fact that they are not well known. We are
getting the WedgeTech, since it is at least 20% cheaper for the power
than most of the other notebooks I looked at. Wedge Technologies'
people were *very* helpful as far as hardware specifications, including
chipsets. Most other companies I had to wade through several levels of
support personnel before I could find the necessary information.
I will be receiving the system shortly, and I'd be glad to report
back to the group on installation and performance of RedHat Linux
on it, as well as general construction quality.
Basic specs: Pentium 233 w/MMX, 14.1" XVGA screen (!), integrated
sound, video capabilities, 128M memory, 3.1G hard
drive; PCMCIA cards for Ethernet, SCSI, and 56K
USR Modem, plus port replicator, all for less than
$4200!!! (Toshiba P133 with similar hardware was
well ver $5000)
