So I'll try - at what might be a very simplistic level. Some time ago I worked with UNIX on Sun SPARC workstations - specifically trying to get a dongle to work on a serial line. I seem to remember that the system calls used to access the serial line were critical. There were several options to define how and when the serial driver reported the arrival of a character to the calling program - one was immediate and occurred with every character (as you would like) but most of the others assumed you wanted a line of data before the call returned - so either 80 characters or a timeout of about a second was a typical default. Now of course you're not writing code. I think the same control settings were available in some sort of driver configuration setup - some option in "stty ....". At risk of being dammned, have you tried the man pages? Hope this helps ..... - Graham > Any suggestions??? This is preventing me from doing everything from > Linux as automated cron jobs. That's all thats changed.
