All too often it is not the quantity of air flow that is important, but
the placement. In the instance of the ST-15150N the critical components
that MUST be kept cool appear to be the integrated circuits located on the
vertical flexible circuit above the SCSI connector and the large chips on
the top circuit substrate above this. From what I have been able to
gather, the cooling the HDA itself is a bit less critical. For one thing
it is a LOT easier to cool, because it is large and relatively even in
temperature. So air flow almost anywhere will suffice. But the indicated
chips are concentrated dissipators and need specific direction of air flow
across them at enough speed to cause turbulence.
