Quantum Fireball, WD 2217, Linux, and NT: help!

Another scenario is, I take the disk, create partitions from NT and
format them and chkdsk /r them and it's fine. I create partitions from
Linux and that success. But running mke2fs, badblocks, mkswap,
anything that tries to access the disk gives me a segfault and the
kernel message. Perhaps I should try a later kernel? Are there any
premade boot disks available that use a recent kernel?

Could NT be screwing with the drive in bad ways?

Both machines are PCI and use the NCR53c810 SCSI controller.

Any help, suggestions, or guesses would be appreciated.
