CD-ROM: Chinon CDS-431

Anyone have experience with this CD-ROM device?

I'm trying to install Linux on an old CompuAdd 386/20 which came with the internal Chinon CD-ROM,
and not having much luck. During auto-detect I get the message "scsi: 0 hosts" and if I try to
mount the drive manually I get a "not a block device" error.

The specs say its a 40-pin SCSI interface, conforming to Sony and Phillips CD-ROM standard Mode 1
and Mode 2 (whatever that means). The SCSI card it came with is also labeled Chinon, and has both
internal and external connectors. I've not touched the factory settings, which have the drive at
ID 0, I/O address 300H, terminated, parity check OFF.

I've tried a number of options building the boot disks, including SCSI card type, BIOS enabled,
etc., but so far I can't see that the CD drive light has ever even gone on.

Any ideas out there?

tx,

Steve

This is correct behaviour. Linux doesn't support the nasty little Chinon SCSI
adapter (hence it shows 0 SCSI host cards). You will have to get another SCSI
card (the AHA1540B and Future Domain/Seagate ST-02 work with my CDX-431).

It is conceivable that the DOS drivers for the card will work from the DOS
emulator, in which case you could mount CDs once you've completed installation.
