ASUS NCR53c810 SCSI, Wangdat 3100, sense reset, danger nop, woes

I'm trying to get an ASUS PCI with the NCR SCSI adapter to work with a
Wangdat 3100. There are already two Seagate Barracudas working there,
IDs 0 and 1, 0 being terminated; they work well. However, I'm had
bizarre problems trying to add the tape drive.

Specifically, here's what I get from Linux 1.2.1 or 1.2.13:

scsi0 : target 5 lun 0 request sense failed, performing reset
    scsi0 : DANGER : NCR53c7xx_reset is NOP

and it hangs. ID 5 is the tape.

This happened every time Monday. Yesterday I took the drive, having
been disconnected for some hours, and put it in a SCSI Wintel machine;
it worked. I brought it back, changing nothing, and plugged it in; *it
worked*. I rejoiced, took the system down to set the software-eject
enable jumber; it still worked. I rebooted this morning, and it failed.
Power-cycled; it failed.

I have not seen the "drive fault" LED on. The BIOS identifies the model
of the drive correctly.

What does it mean? What do I do? Is it just a cabling/termination
problem? I've already tried a different cable, and have tried using the
tape as terminator instead of the disks (not as good because it's
passive). I'm lost.
