Help! Linux can not see SCSI cd drive.

I am not able to install linux from
cd-rom.

The system is
486 VLB with AMI (11/92) bios
   Promise EDIE 2300+ controller
   Maxtor and Conner IDE disks
   NEC SCSI-2 cd-rom drive
   Jazz sound card with integrated
rom-less Future Domain 8xx scsi controller.

1. With Yggdrasil Fall 94 distribution of linux,
I tried, at the boot prompt,
      linux tmc8xx=0xCA00,11
   but it complains about
      NEC IDE - CDROM error
   and does not even boot.

2. With Slackware March 95 distribution of linux
I tried at the boot prompt
      ramdisk tmc8xx=0xCA00,11
and it allows me to login as root.
However, when I try to mount the cd-rom
   with, for example
      mount -t iso9660 -r /dev/<cdrom> /mnt
   it complains that
/dev/<cdrom> is not a block device
[ of course the directory entry says it
     is a block device ]
I have tried with all the cd* device files
   I could locate.

3. Exactly the same problem with
   FreeBSD 2.0.5 installtion attempt.

What am I missing ?

The default scsi id was 0,
I tried with 2 and 4 -- same result.

Thanks for your help.

The kernel you are using doesn't support CD-ROM drivies.

You need a bootdisk that supports SCSI CD-ROMs. On the Slakware
distribution CD, look into the bootdisk.144 (not sure about the name)
directory. I think the bootdisk image is "scsi" but double check with
the README file there.

Try mount -t iso9660 -r ro /dev/scd0 /cdrom

I have a virtually the same problem with a CHINON 525 SCSI drive and Adaptec
1522a controller. The common elements to the above are that I am using EIDE
HDDs and SCSI CD-ROM. Linux complains that it is not a block device or the
scsi bus times out.

I am using the Slackware 3.0 November 1995 edition.

The CD-ROM drive works fine under NT and WIN95.

I have linux working by copying the software off CD using Win95,
booting from disk, and mounting the DOS drive.

Linux works fine, I just can't mount the CD - which is a real pain.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Ben.

What's missing here is the kernel/boot disk you are using to boot linux.
In the Slackware distribution, I believe there are 2 scsi boot disks
(maybe more). Check the Installation or Distribution HOWTOs to find the
correct boot disk to use. I believe all the SCSI boot disks have SCSI
CDROM support compiled in. If you have linux working, try recompiling
a kernel with all the correct support (both for your particular SCSI
controller AND for SCSI CD-ROMs). You might also check the symbolic
link that is /dev/cdrom to make sure it is pointing to the /dev/scd0
(I think!) device, or just try mounting the /dev/scd0 device directly,
as alluded to in an earlier response.

If you haven't compiled a kernel before, get the appropriate HOWTO
docs and check the readme's in /usr/src/linux. And don't have too
much fun without me. Especially when you make 1 mistake configuring
the kernel and get to reanswer all the questions...

Hope that helps,

Mike Leiter

I am having the EXACT same problem as you. I have a SIDE GOLD adapter (aha152x
compatible, VL-BUS) and have the Chinon CDS-525 and a Fujitsu 540 meg hd, both
SCSI-2. I have no problem with the hard drive, but the CD-ROM refuses to
mount! The CD-ROM eventally times out (under both redhat and linux CD
Distributions) eventually saying that the superblock is bad or that the wrong
file system is being mounted. See my origonal post in the Linux.setup group
for all the details. WHAT IS THE @#$%*&^ DEAL HERE? (The scsi FAQ on cd-rom is
useless for troubleshooting.)

I don't have the exact problem, but did have similar ones. Make sure
you have iso9660 filesystem support (cat /proc/filesystems or something
close to that.) Make sure you have compiled in block device support
for your particular CDrom setup (cat /proc/devices or something close to
that.) I originally thought my CDROM was scsi, but it turned out to be
a proprietary interface (/dev/sbpcd) and had to recompile the kernel
to support it. Look at the Kernel-HOWTO for more info.

Hope that helps.

Everyone seems to be using adaptec scsi and IDE at the same time.
If this is the configuration you have, then there are a couple of things
you should be prepared for:

	1) If the scsi card has a scsi bios on board, then it will conflict
with the manster IDE drive in your system. This is because you cannot have
two "intelligent" controllers in the system at the same time.

	2) If you are lucky enough to have gotten past the above, the
autodetect code in the kernel will not be able to find the card(the kernel
locates the scsi card by passively searching memory for a particular
identification string -- if there's no bios, there's no id string).

	3) You can either get around this by adding a command line option
to the LILO prompt at boot up, or you can use a special build of the
kernel with appropriate values compiled in. The command line would look
something like:

	LILO: linux aha152x=0x340,11,7,1
where
0x340 is the port addres in hex
	11 is the IRQ
7 is the scsi id of the interface(ideally this is always 7)
1 is enable/disable scsi reconnect(I use 1 all the time and it
						seems to work fine).

This disables the autodetection code in the kernel. You should note
that if you give the kernel bad information about how to find the
scsi interface, it will panic the first time it tries to interact with the
interface(in other words, check to be sure that you are passing the right
values before you try it).
On a final note, the example above works for the aha1520, aha1522
family of adapters(this is the adapter shipped on a SoundBlaster, too). If
you have a different adapter, you'll need to modify the above accordingly.

I apologize if I have repeated any of the above information from a
post I put into this conference a week ago -- I did a lot of responding
to email, and I am having trouble keeping track of what I said last time
this came up.

Hope this helps some of you....

I'm posting on the Web, so am not able to quote... Your reply regarding IDE and SCSI adapters,
was a god sent... I have been struggling to get Linux 1.2.8 to see both my NCR 53c810 based
SCSI card and my AHA 1505 and had no luck... Your post has pointed me in the right direction,
thanks!
