Which video card maker should I support?

Hi,

I get the impression that no video card makers are completely
Linux friendly; with some giving open source drives to some of
their cards, others providing compiled binaries for some of their
cards and others providing nothing. So we can not say "get
anything from brand XYZ". Is this the case?

Is there much choice at all if you want something unusual like
it has to be available in Australia, quiet, support Sync-On-Green
and fit an AGP 4X 1.5V slot?

followup set to comp.os.linux.hardware
