Disk Read Errors, RH 8.0, SMP, RAID5
#222

G'day People,

I am experiencing random disk read errors under my configuration. I have a
34MB tarball and when I extract using tar zxvf or tar ztvf, I sometimes get
CRC errors at random points within the archive.

If I create a copy of the tarball and compare it with the original, on some
attempts I will see differences between the files. The system hasn't had any
abrupt crashes, but this behaviour scares me.

I suspect that this may be an issue with either the Rocketraid 404
controller or a bug in RAID5 under SMP, but I have no real leads. Any
advice/assistance would be much appreciated.

* RedHat 8.0 running Kernel 2.4.18-27.8.0
* 4x Seagate Barracuda IV 80Gb drives (RAID optimised versions)
* Root partition on Linux Software RAID5
* ASUS A7M266-D SMP motherboard w/2 Athlon XP 1900+
* 512MB registered DDR ECC memory
* Highpoint Rocketraid 404 controller

Regards, Vlad.

man fsck
man badblocks

You might need to mount the drive read-only for some tests
to avoid corruption.
