Redhat 7 and NCR SCSI controller problem with CD-R and CD-WR

Hi Experts,

(Warning: Long debug at end)

I have the following issue with RedHat 7.

My CD writers (Yamaha CRW8824 and old 400t) do not work
properly on a Symbios chip based SCSI card. I get all sorts of
errors that I first attributed to the Xcdroast or cdrecord programs
but now I think they are related to the SCSI bus somehow.

This leads to the following questions for the experts:

1. RH 7 loads the "ncr53c8xx" module for the SCSI controller.

Why does it not load the "sym53c8xx" module? (The chip IS
   a Symbios 53c810A)

2. I can force the load of the "sym53c8xx" after unloading the
   "ncr53c8xx" module from the kernel.

How do you get RH 7 to load the correct module when "Kudzu"
insists that it is an NCR chip and not a Symbios chip?

3. On the "news.rsj.de" newsgroups server there there is a newsgroup
dedicated to OS/2 and the RSJ CD Writer software for OS/2.

In this newsgroup there are lots of references to ensuring that
the CD-R drive is run in ASYNC mode on the SCSI bus. Many of the
error messages quoted there are very similar to mine.

Do you need to run ASYNC with this driver for the CD-R/CD-WR?

5. Does anyone know or have experience with using CD-R/CD-WR drives
on Linux with the Symbios chip and ASYNC versus SYNC mode of
   operation, in particular with "cdrecord"?

I really want to get this recording setup going under Linux.

Below is a typical debug from Xcdroast telling me what happens
with the CD-writer.

Note that I have used "dummy" mode as I have created 12 "coasters"
until now and that is a bit frustrating to say the least.
(The problems are identical in real writes)

Also note that the Yamaha 400t works fine under OS/2.

For some reason I can do direct copy of a data CD from my CD-ROM
to the writer (One failed out of 10).

I can not write ISO9660 images or sound files to the writer.

Best regards
Anthony
