Ive managed to get my linux box to detect the just installed HP DDS-2 tape drive. It comes up in the kernel like this. Vendor: HP Model: HP35470A Rev: 1009 Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 No problem. Now. I look in /dev and I indeed have /dev/tape which is pointing to /dev/st0 no worries. normal. Now, where to from here? If I do an "mt status" I get this. With or without a tape in the drive. SCSI 2 tape drive: File number=-1, block number=-1, partition=0. Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default). Soft error count since last status=0 General status bits on (10000): IM_REP_EN NO other MT commands work? I cant rewind it, I cant do anything with it? The only other MT command I have managed to get to work is "MT LOAD" which ejects a tape if there is a tape in the drive. My question is. Where do I go from here? How can I erase this tape? How can I do a simple backup eg "tar cvf /etc /dev/st0" or something "shrug" Any help greatly appreciated. P.S what tape backup software would you reccommend? I've looked at Arkeia, and it looks pretty good, has windows client too, so I can admin it from winblows box... Cheers, James

James, sounds like it's all working just fine. Have you tried # mt erase ? Note that while it erases the tape I've found that it goes into a state where you can't stop the job until it's done and it can take a long time to complete. Then to do a backup, with tar, something like what you said. I've used BRU for backup and it's dead simple. I'd amanda looks good but ran into a problem on a large drive for some reason. I'd be interested to hear what you come up with. peter James Mandy <jamesm@wantree.com.au> wrote in message news:7qt39i$143$1@centipede.wantree.com.au... > Ive managed to get my linux box to detect the just installed HP DDS-2 tape > drive. > It comes up in the kernel like this. > > Vendor: HP Model: HP35470A Rev: 1009 > Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 > Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 > > No problem. Be sure to specify the device when using mt ie;
mt -f /dev/st0 erase
mt -f /dev/st0 status
mt -f /dev/nst0 rewoffl
Another thing. Your tar command is the wrong way round. Try tar cvf /dev/st0
/etc
The device should follow the 'f' option.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Brian.

Everything I try gives me: Cannot write to /dev/st0: Input/output error or /dev/st0: Input/output error when doing mt commands. I just changed some jumpers on the drive to see if it was that, but its still not working for me.. ideas? I've got a HP35480A and I've been having nothing but trouble since I purchased it (had success with a conner DAT though :). Basically, I can't succesfully read or write to or from a DAT - between I/O errors and SCSI bus timeouts, nothing works. Trying to view or extract a tar on a DAT I'd made earlier, sends the drive off (presumably reading) for a while. Despite using the 'v' option with tar, I get no feedback, and the drive just sits there, reading a bit, going 'clunk', sometimes rewinding a little, then reading again - and so on. Eventually, I get some sort of SCSI timeout. <sigh> The conner drive works fine... (and the DAT's themselves are fine) So: does your drive actually make any motions when you send either mt or tar commands to it? If not, then it could be perhaps a SCSI configuration error. If so, then it could be a 'HP error' like I'm getting :/ And as a side-note, could anyone recommend what SCSI settings I should be using with such a tape drive? I haven't been able to find out much on the web, and I'm looking for recommendations for such values as 'Command Queueing' and 'Synchronous Transfers' - what do tape drives usualy take for SCSI settings? Well, hope you have more luck than me :) Cheers, ________________________________________________________________________ Giulio Harding giulio@cs.adelaide.edu.au Systems Administrator Phone: +618 8303 6182 Department of Computer Science Voicemail: +618 8394 0643 University of Adelaide, South Australia "In the beginning, the Universe was created. I used to have a lot of bus hangs with a Seagate SCSI DAT drive, until I changed the SCSI settings to Asynchronous transfer, I've not had any problems since even with single backups that fill almost the whole tape which wouldn't have got 10% done before. The Official RedHat distro > + goodies CD includes a BRU evaluation version I think. An earlier Redhat 5.2? came with a single user license of BRU that was not a demo. I don't think that's the case any more. These days, we've gone back to tar which even does incrementals all on its own. peter
