Exabyte 8200 I/O Error. Wrong block size?

Hello,

I bought a used Exabyte 8200 2.2Gb SCSI tape drive yesterday and
am trying to determine if it's got a problem or not.

It is recognized just fine, and can read the old data on the used tape
that came in it, but when I try to tar or dd to it, I get a I/O error
after a certain number of records, that number varying dependant upon
the block size I set. dd fails with a message like:

	# dd if=bigfile.tmp of=/dev/rmt1
	dd: /dev/rmt1: I/O error
	541+0 records in
	540+0 records out
	#

Tar fails similarly. (/dev/rmt0 is a well working Tandberg 3600 QIC drive)

So I'm trying to figure out what's going on here. Is there a proper
block size I should be using, or is it perhaps that the tape drive
has a problem, or what?

Any hints, suggestions, pointers to help, etc. would be much appreciated.

BTW, I'm running Linux 1.3.11 on a Pentium 75 Mhz, ASUS Triton based mb
with the included NCR SCSI interface.

Thanks,

Dave Barnett

I think the 8200 uses blocksizes of (multiples of) 1 kbyte

You might give it a try
