More than 32 serial devices

I have 4x 8 port serial cards in a 686 running linux 2.0.30. I've created the device files ttyS4 and cua4 through to ttyS35 and cua35. I decided to leave the standard serial devices ttyS0-ttyS3 and cua0-cua3 alone, as I still want to use the serial ports on the motherboard, so the first serial port on the cards is ttyS4. When I go to configure the serial ports on the cards using setserial, the first 28 ports get set ok, but the last 4 throw an error "No such Device" (ttyS32-ttyS35). Is there some sort of upper limit on the number of serial devices linux will provide, or is there some workaround. I've tried using the MAKEDEV script and using mknod to create the devices, but the same thing happens each time. I also grabbed the latest copy of setserial, with no luck - I couldn't see anything in the code that set any sort of upper limit, so perhaps it's something to do with the kernel? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers, Mark.
